It's dangerous to go digging in barrows:cry:

lol these days I never poke around lairs and dungeons till around bronze at least. Only exception are those mega-lairs which has a decent chance of popping GPs or adventurers. Those I just sac multiple scouts till something happens--and try to defend against those boss rushes which usually pops from it. It does get scary at times though, like the time I popped 3 azers (str 6 collateral) which killed multiple warriors from my cities, but the reward at the end is usually worth it.

Which are the mega lairs?

There are a few lairs that have names that would qualify. Also, some of the lairs that sport a few guards like those new supercharged goblins might be included.

Sometimes, it is hard to tell what is what, though, but just look for that Dragon icon that says you are on a tile that can be explored further.

BTW, that was a bad find on Turn 3. I have found worse, but never that soon and so close to my city - I just had my unit quickly killed. :(

Epic Lairs include Brandaline's Well, The Broken Sepulcher, The Pyre of the Seraphic, and the Aifon Isle. Exploring them will only cause Big Good and Big Bad outcomes.

(I have of course added a few more in my version, and changed it so that more mediocre outcomes are possible and so that they can never be cleared. I also made all lair exploration take a few turns but not cost movement)

Lol, reminds me of the time I lost 2 games in a row in the first few turns, first by finding spectres that spawned on my city, second by finding spectres that spawned near enough to take it the next turn. :p
Oh, and when I started next to the Pyre and destroyed it.

OTOH -- explore lairs near your enemy, and run away from bad outcomes.

these days barbs have an odd tendency to wander from next to your neighbour to hunt the guy who popped him down. Anyone else noticed this trend?

Kinda miss the good old days of pillaging a pyre next to someone else's city lol

Yea, barbs now single out a civ, so they might walk right past you or another civ peacefully to go kill another.

I don't think this is always possible anymore. You used to have movement pts. available after popping a lair, but no longer. After you pop the bad guys, you are left there with no movement pts. and a sitting duck.

But, you are right - sometimes the bad guys show bizarre behavior and ignore you (all tied into the targeting theory?) and move in another direction.

I often find, more often than not, however, that after I pop the bad guys I am the target and my unit is attacked and usually killed.

I wonder if those early dangerous pops from lairs are the hidden "regenerate map" feature from the menu :satan:

why do people call dungeons lairs and vice versa ? They are different...

Yea these days I just use green scouts to pop dungeons and lairs. You lose the possibility of getting the random small boni for the popping unit like enchanted blade and stuff, but for the real good stuff like items you could always still pass it on to veteran units.

I too find that the popped barbs almost always kill the popping unit, but the point I was trying to make was that after killing the popping unit, they seem to have a tendency to ignore the other AI cities near them and head over to attack yours, if you popped them.

Reminds me of my first dungeon adventure, which was with Marnok's first release. My Scout started next to a Barrow, so I figured I'd see what's there. Say Hello to Abashi the Black Dragon!
