First, I don't have the software to try a decent screen shot or two - so I'd like to attach a saved game file - how do I do that?

I'm at about 475 AD with 4 cities established and the aggravating part of this game has bit me again. I essentially hemmed by several other civs with no where to send a new settler. Should I negotiate for Open Boders so I scout and send a settler 'out there' to try to build more cities? Or should I military and 'fight my out? I know I'm not giving much to on so a attaching a saved game file would probably help you to help me.

I'm at work, so I won't be able to view your saved game anyway, but maybe somebody else could help out with that.

I am curious though what settings that you're playing. (Difficulty / Speed / Map Type and Size / # of starting Civ's). I usually play Prince/Epic/Standard Hemispheres/16 - 18 starting Civ's... from that perspective, I'm usually involved in early warring because like you, it's common to get boxed in by the other Civ's. If you're playing a larger map with less Civ's, your problem may be that you're not focasing enough on early expansion. Still, in the situation you described, it sounds like you need to focus on military production and start taking land from your neighbors. I generally wouldn't try settling accross other Civ's - the matinence will kill your economy and it's harder to defend those cities.
