I'd love to hear someone explain how calling Swahili a degenerate language isn't racist. If that's what you're doing...

Eh...it's not worth the effort. Some people want to be inappropriate for the sake of being inappropriate.

It's pretty good music, but it's just one song. If it was a soundtrack, I'd give a better review. But yeah, I've turned on the game just to hear it sometimes.

But I'd rather play the game and hear Beethoven sometimes.

I would give it a 10/10 because i'm politically correct and people would think I was a racist if I didn't :)

I liked the menu/opening screen music the first two times, but after that, it got very repetitive, very quickly. I've turned off the music at this point, but wish I could leave it on for the diplomacy screens.

9/10, compared to civ 1-3 music, its awesome, although i did replace some of the other music, especially later in the game with some of my own that better fits the ongoing events

I've not read thru all this thread, I'm sorry. So I might post things that have already been talked over and over, but well, this is my view:

In my opinion the title song is just beautiful. When I first started the game, I didn't want to start playing, the music took me somewhere else. Knowing how good game CIV4 really is, that's exceptional.

In my mind it really describes the born of a man, and all of his/her hopes in an era when there was nothing, and also when everything was possible. All this looked from above, taking distance from it all. In time and space. Wow. The title screen animation with sunrises and -sets direct thoughts into this direction.

I love it, and as a comment for those who say "I get used to it", "it's repetitave" - what would be better tune then?

Civ 4's menu music is far and away the best I've ever heard in a game. I'm no fanboy but I think it captures the mood and the 'dawn' perfectly.

There aren't many memorable tunes used for game menus, but I'm glad they didn't go for something classical and non-descript.

Some of the previous posters obviously need ear transplantations. :twitch:

I am not sure I would have felt the same way about this tune if I had encountered it outside the context of Civ, but there is something about the ancient feel of the swahili language and the beautiful graphics of Earth that mix to produce a feeling of awe proper for taking on the task of leading a people through six millenia. I also particularly like the way the tune goes back and forth from being dramatic (right after the second chorus) and soft, reminding of the way empires have risen and fallen throughout history. Then there's the whole underlying optimistic mood to remind one that a game called "Civilization" should be about more than just destroying ones enemies.

I give it a 9, it is truly a remarkable piece of music, and doubly so for being composed for a computer game.

(Also, for the record, I'm an atheist.):p

I really like the CD that came with the Special Edition, they should have crammed all the music on it.
Really like "Washington's Retreat"

The classical and medaeval music is excellent (I've even rushed to Theology just to hear the Allegri), the modern music stinks..and the menu music is ..well..had someome watched "Gladiator" far too many times? ;)

It got pretty annoying very fast, in my ears ... especially when I learned I was being subliminally fed a Jesus promo message.

I understand that the subject of the lyrics is a bit inappropriate for this game (especially considering how careful they were with handling the various religions in the game itself) but unless you subconsciously (or consciously) understand swahili, it can't be a subliminal message.

I can still enjoy it from a purely musical point of view even if I'm disapointed about the subject of the song.

You could do a lot worse. Its sets the mood and when that camera shot in video when camera drops from clouds, the music is tops.

If they played that music in-game I think there would be considerably less wars. Although I doubt it would restrain a pissed off monty AI.

and who care's if its the Lord's prayer in swahilli

baba yetu yesu !

It's Swahili? I listened to it a few times and it sounded a lot like Somali but at first I assumed it was just jibberish. At least I got the right continent. :)

Actually my favourite is the Industrial Era track. Reminds me of Bugs Bunny cartoons. :) The medieval track isn't so bad but a few tunes are little more than wailing and chanting... much like the modern track. *shivers*

9, if we compare with other games, but it just can't be the very best for me :)
but if just as a title music for Civ game its da best.

P.S. It's my ring tone ATM!

9/10...It's hard to ever say "the best ever" about anything.

Can't vote, because of mixed opinions.
Menu song - good.
Ancient & classical eras - fair.
On to Industrial era - excellent.
Modern era - tuneless, monotonous, uninspiring and meaningless rubbish. Minus 5 out of 10 - oh, and another -5 for being blatted out for potentially more turns. Once in the Modern Era it's worth going for the quickest win possible, not so much for the score as for stopping the hideous din. One day maybe I'll get around to changing it.
