I really do not want to dwell on the negatives here, but absolutely what you need to do is wipe the slate clean and back up to clean unmodified install of the game.

You then need to download and install the V1.29 patch so you will be on the same sheet of music with anyone who might start to give you advice.

Then, you need to back up and start some Warlord level games on standard maps with a stanadrd numebr of opponents and work on the most basic and fundamental game play skills. Forget tanks, forget the space ship.

Here is a screenshot of your capital Washington to show you why:

handyandy2.jpg

Your Palace is in Washington and you have built your forbidden palace in St. Louis. This is terrible placement (except in communism it matters little).

Look at the placement of mines and irrigation, this is the signature of automating workers almost from the start of the game and doing this costs you somewhere between 15% and 35% of the power and progress in the game. The worker is the most important unit for you to understand how to control and it is so fundamental to the game that if you hate managing your early workers it almost demands that you seek out another game experience. You cannot play well at any difficulty level without getting a better handle on this.

Look at the lack of railroads. These are supposed to be your most productive cities and rails are required on every square.

Look at the residual jungle squares right next to St. Louis where your FP is located. You founded this city in 1475bc and now it is 3000 years later and you still do not have your 2nd most powerful city contributing to your empire.

Look at your capital city of Washington, you have 4 infantry and 1 cavalry stacked in that city when it is 1000 miles away from any possible attack.

Everyone of your cities is a disaster of management and strategy just like those in the picture.

Here are the links to the CivFanatics WarAcademy and to the articels subforum where you need to read alot, play some examples, and then post here if you have some questions earlier in the play of an unmodified game.

HandyAndy,

I also need to discretely but publicly ask you approximately how old you are and if this copy of the game you are playing is yours or if you are playing it on your parents' or roommates' computer.

I have a 6 year old son and a 9 year old daughter who also play Civ3 and some of this perspective helps me to see some of these game play issues.

Andy,

You can backup your civ3 saves folder to some other folder outside of the "Civilization III" folder.

Then uninstall Civ3 completely and delete the civ3 folder from your hard drive.

Reinstall Civ3 fresh from your CD.

Install the V1.29 patch.

Then you should be able to start a Warlord game on a standard size pangea with minimum water (maximum landmass). If you want to post a save file of the starting 4000BC spin you get with these settings, I would play parallell to you and compare your game to the things I do.

The right place to do this is in the stories/succession games forum and you may find some other players there who would liek to play along and compare notes to you.

At the point where you are in the skills development, I wouls suggest that you only play 10 turns before you compare notes and discuss things. That way you can keep playing your own game if you want to or you can download one of the other players positions and play on from there and compare notes again after 10 more turns.

(give this current game a burial and don't try to reload it right away into your cleaned up game install just in case it has any corrupted variables that can be passed on.)

cheers cracker

have you seen the tread in genral civ called something like i am so bad at civ3 carry on

on was cracker compares you to a 6 year old

Hopefully, your play does not compare to well with the play of my six year old. ;)

He doesn't read very well yet and its hard for him to count for the units with costs of greater than 30 shields.

He's pretty good about not attacking units on mountains but has a big lock up affinity for swordsmen because he thinks they have "lightsabers" and this leads him to have way too many of them

His favorite unit is the Army Leader because its says "Hoe!!! Hoe!!! ... " repeatedly when it attacks.

He has picked up on the never build wealth thing though and he is a demon at rightclicking on terrain squares to figure out which one "has the most candy thingies" so he can pick where to build roads and mine first. His view is to use the shovel on the brown ones and use the spikey thing on the green ones, but at least that gets him close.

He also likes horsies and then particularly the samurai because that reminds him even more of the Jedi Knights.

For Christmas he is getting a few Digimon units plus Power Rangers and a few Zoids like the Blue Liger, and at that point I may lose some perspective as to what he is talking about when he talks to me about the game. But I am sure he will still have a basic grasp of how his workers make it possible for his "Toy Units" to be in teh game and then let him have lots of fun.

i have started a succesion game so any tips on that one would be nice its called im not very good:lol:

Don't worry handyAndy, I'm only 13! But I've got quite a headstart having started off with civnet (same as civ1 but with minor changes) and civ2. I so far only play on low levels, but only yesterday started on a Regent level.

In civnet and civ2 I played as Chieftain (except for near end of civ2 where I tried Warlord and got better!)--I tried Deity on civ2 and got destroyed in 10 turns with all my cities in civil-disorder!

Anyway, what you need to do is gradually build your way up. First Cheiftain. Unmod everything, and just play with all the normal rules, then try Standard map first (small or tiny if you're not too sure) and play. Use some of the documents in the CivFanatics War Academy to help you. They help me! But make sure not to cheat and mod the game, or else you'll find it hard to play harder levels because you're not used to it, and you can't compare to anyone else.

And if you're not sure about something, what's the Forum for?? I've used it lots of times. (Not as many as some here though!!)

Overall:
Don't mod you're game rules.
Try on Chieftain, if you win, go to Warlord, and so on.
Get helpful docs from War Academy and reference.
And just to get it in, DON'T MOD!

I hope I've helped, if you want, even e-mail me (click on my profile button at the top of my post) or anyone else with your game and ask what they think and what you could do better. It's all about learning!

I didn't even know how cities built things in civnet! Or how to get units to a different continent! (I was so excited the day I discovered that units could go on boats! -- Mind you, I must have only been 6-7 years old!)

P.S. It's said that the younger you are, the faster you learn!! I hope that's true!

Cracker was ruthlessly harsh (which by the way, cracker, was a *****y thing for you to do, you could have put it in *much* nicer terms), but his points are valid. The thing that bothers me most is that you are playing on a modded version. Never ever ever when you're just learning. His idea of installing/uninstalling was a good idea. Fortunetly, you do get better. Things eventually fall into place, and you learn. However, this will *not* happen when you play with a modded version.

I've been wondering: does PTW have a "watch" feature on the game? I think this would be invaluable to newbies. Just watching a few games would make a WORLD of difference.

Yeah but cracker made excellent points. Why did you play with only 2 civs?

Am I the only 12 year old on this site???

I've done it, its a fun little twist. I don't recommend doing it when you just start, however.

I'm one year your senior. So I can bully you. :p

Handyandy I have to agree somewhat with Cracker.

Delete the game and start straight over is what I'd advise.

Now that I had a horrible twist with overthrowing democracy, I now see why you're wallowing in Communism. It took me seven turns to get out of anarchy and the turn I did and moved into democracy it was overthrown that same turn.

I dunno what you mean by trading for oil cause the save I downloaded - you were at war.

Pre-Modern Age warfare is one of the worst kinds to deal with. This is the age where every unit is closely matched. Riflemen are suspectible to Infantry and Marines but not badly. Stacks of longbowmen and spearman can total any marine or infantry done right.

I dunno about the oil really, can't help much.

Unless I haven't searched throughly enough I don't see where Cracker has said about the "5-6 unclaimed iron" part.

When you don't have Recycling Plants, Mass Transit Systems, Airports, in all your cities it isn't the time to turn on wealth IMO.

Cracker's right in changing the style of play. I agree with that.

Always take republic over democracy. Same benefits without the severe war weariness and chance of being overthrown. Immunity to propaganda and the slightly increased worker efficiency Democracy gives you doesn't come close to outweighing that. The corruption difference between the two is also minimal.

thank you very infotmative

i dont like reading trough the stuff at the Academy very boring

am i the only 12 year old

probably as you have to be 13 to regerster

hey, that game wasn't necessarily modded up the wazoo. It could just have been an accelerated production game. That explains why his units are 50% of the actualy cost and why he's at satelite with communism in the 1600's.

I think the "modded" vs "accelerated" argument is sort of moot at this point.

Elmer Fudd looked at the screen shots and even he could say "Sumpins Scwoowie."

I think we are moving on to address the root issues.

For those who read Handyandy's comment:

"i dont like reading trough the stuff at the Academy very boring"

I would just add that some of the articles may be a bit dry, but there are about 5 or 6 of them that should almost be mandatory reading before you are allowed to post more than just a few messages in the Forums.

Without a doubt, there is not a player on the planet who is currently stuck on the Warlord level who has read the major articles. I just don't see this as a possibility.

Qoute from handyandy:
You don't have to be 13 to register, I registered when I was 12. I did click the 'under 12' link, but it brought me to the same page!

Anyway, I agree with cracker, he put down excellent points, however blunt. (They weren't harsh anyway, IMO).

:goodjob: Cracker!
