What to build now?

Okay, so I'm trying to be careful about only building buildings and wonders that are going to help my cities (instead of just building everthing, everywhere). But what if there's no options? On this forum, people advise to build only the buildings and wonders you need, nothing else, and don't build so many units to keep up the gpt. Fine... but the "Wealth" and "Research" options are so weak!

So, what to do if you can't build anything useful in the city?
 
If there is nothing useful to build then as weak as they are Wealth and Research is the best option to keep you from sinking gpt into a useless building.
 
Or build a scout in like 3 turns... and then disband it for 10 gold or gift to CS. Stupid game.

Yup. Build wealth is completely useless. To use my current game as an example: I can build a worker in 4 turns and sell it for 60 gold (marathon), or I could produce wealth for 4 turns and get about 21 gold. Not even close.

If you have everything you want, then stop working production tiles, and work gold or food tiles, or use specialists, so you can research more stuff to build.
And build trading posts instead of mines/lumbermills.

Or go build an army and use it to kick in the other players.

I never find that there is nothing I want.
