What to build?

I just started playing America again after reading some of the strategy tips in the War Academy. I was doing a lot of experimenting with various attributes and didn't really come back to America until I read the ideas.
Scouts. At least three to gobble up the goody huts, and then settlers and workers. I've played two rounds with that strategy and it works fairly well, because it expands you immensely early on in the game. I try to sneak a granary in there as soon as I can to double the food production and then a temple to begin the cultural expansion. Depending on the barbarian threat, I usually toss in a warrior in the mix when they get feisty. The upgrade on them makes it worthwhile as I now try and defend the cities with TOW once I get to that level and use the Mech Infantry for offensive ops if I get embroiled in a late war.
A lot depends on location, Beamup and MAS are right. If I'm close to other civs, I'll vary the fare to prevent an early war and save the trouble of having to recapture a city lost in an early war. Or, use the troops to rock my opponent back early on as well...

The palace produces culture, no need for a temple in the capital for that. Unless you are planning a culture vicory.

what are the map settings? standard size continents, I would usually build scout, scout, warrior or settler (depending on city size & growth), then vice versa maybe. It all depends on who is around, also.
Bigger, I might do another scout, smaller or island, I might just build 1 scout.

I usually play on a large to huge size map, as I like a lot of terrain to play around on. I use temples in the ring cities to build culture up. How did your first attempt go?
