Yes i have no knowledge on how to build a great empire. i keep getting negative income and people keep killing my workers and others. i haven't got any idea on what to build first what do. or anything so please help me.

The basic rule of money is very simple: For each city, just make sure that its income is more than its upkeep. In another word, don't build a library, university, and lab in a town that has only 1 or 2 citizens.;)

cwood, welcome to CFC. :)

Give us an example of your number of cities/government type/number of units/upkeep costs and we can see why you are losing money. Don't forget to mention your lux/tax/science slider settings too.

It could be (as Moonsinger suggests) that you have cities that can't afford their upkeep, or it could be that you have 100 troops more than you are alloted for free under your government type/number of cities. It could also be because of trdes with the AI (or lack of them, although this won't push you negative), etc.

Edit: I forgot to mention the importance of roading *all* your tiles that cities are working on. This is essential to getting a decent income.

also regarding unit upkeep:
You might stay longer in a government with *free* unit support. Wait for your core cities to be big enough, road all working tiles and then switch to republic/demo.

Dare I suggest reading the manual.....? It covers taxes etc in some detail which should help a lot.

Noooooo anything but reading the manual, that silly thing has more vagueness and outright mistakes ....

ok so build a city. like i build a american colony. great resources and stuff. lux/ resources: iron silk dye. yes this makes my people happy. but i don't know how to change gov.s and make more civilians in that city. this is a complex game. i played once and died in less that two days. i think i got to spread out and not enough defence. idon't know. so how do you do this. and suggestions are always welcome.

Your first goal should be to build as many cities as you can, ignore temples and stuff for now. 3-4 tiles apart is a good spacing.

Garrison 2 warriors in every city to start, they keep the people happy and help with defense. Later you can start replacing warriors with spearmen and once you discover Republic you only need defense in your border cities.

Have 1 worker per city making terrain improvements, you should have one fully improved tile for every citizen in the city.

cwood,
better spy on war academy here on CFC, because -as Renata said- the manual doesn't come up with details. The manual is giving just a decent overview. You might also read one or another thread on the Succession Game's board (-> Stories & Tales). Aweful lot to read, but you'll probably spot some hints you weren't aware of yet. Actually, there's "Sirp's Training Day For Aspiring Monarchs". Good stuff. Not that I suggest to play on monarch level, but every turn is well commented here. You can compare your decisions you would have made with those of excellent players, thus improving your playing style (note: you might ignore some maneuver like lux slider on lower levels). Good luck!

yes i own this game just trying to get to knew it better.
