So. After many a hours of searching and putting random ideas together, i have fixed the issue. Anyone who bought the original copy of CIV 4 via steam, will have trouble installing the retail version of BTS. If your recieving the oh so frequent error of Updating to Patch 1.74, then crashing because it can't find the patch error and you use steam, this if for you. So here's what to do.

Obviously, you have version 1.74 because steam updates it automatically. The BTS installer just doesn't read it, so it tries to install it. To make it read it, go to

1. Start

2. Run

3. Type in Regedit, Hit enter

4. Go to this Registry key,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FIRAXIS GAMES\Sid Meier's Civilation 4

5. Once at the registry key, right click, and hit add key.

6. Once you've clicked a new folder/key will appear and you will need to rename it.

7. Rename it to 1.74.

8. Insert the Dist to insall BTS.

9. Install BTS, but DO NOT run it yet.

10. Once finished installing, you need to patch it.

11. Go here to patch: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=245912

12. Once patched, You may play the game.*

*note: I opted to insert the game into steam by going to the My Games TAB and clicking in the bottom right hand corner where it says, "Add a Non-Steam Game." It should work even if you don't do this, but I haven't tested it. However, having it in steam doesn't update it automattically, you will still need to patch it manually if any new patches ever come out.

The game still requires the disk to play, But at least it works. If you want to play without the disk, unfortunately, you will have to buy the copy from steam, or other Online distributors.

Hope this helped!

Cheers,

Steve.
