I thought it would be a good opportunity to watch a group of people play the game, maybe learn some new techniques while we, as a group, debated different strategies and tactics. I am always interested in different approaches to solving the challenges of the game, and even like to have people critique some of my habits/"policies". I thought the ability to debate ideas and even to defend suggestions would give me a better understanding of the game, and even a better appreciation for my own playing style. I saw some of this in the succession games, as each player tended to put his own spin on the game during their reign, and I thought this would be like that, but with more debate and discussion. I entered the government because the game was ready to start, and the new culture department still had no deputy, so I volunteered, to learn more about this new aspect of Civ3.
I did actually learn a lot from the early discussions regarding dense builds and also watching the planning of the initial american campaign. However, lately it seems we have degenerated into endless squabbling and bickering about procedures, the bureaucrats run the republic now.
"I call for a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor!"
(Oh, sorry, I stayed up late last night watching Star Wars Phantom Menace with my son).
That's what I was hoping for, and where I think we are.
(Edit: The above movie reference is in no way a reflection upon our current president, I think Donsig has done a great job, even though I originally disagreed with him on many issues, he has impressed me with his judgement and attention to detail. I was only caught up in the sentiment that we are getting bogged down).
