This is a citizen's discussion to get some input on what citizen's were hoping to do in the demogame. Just write a simple paragraph or two stating what you thought the game was about and how you thought you could participate. (As well as what you wanted to do).

Even write what you feel you can't do in the game.

I'll start.

When I first joined, I thought it was an interesting idea, and I wanted to see what it was like. I really liked the citizen's group idea, but it seemed there was just too many rules limiting its' usefullness. So, I left (only to learn that I was nominated for a posistion when someone told me in a succession game). :)

I was hoping to give input, and to see how the game progessed.

I thought it would be a good opportunity to watch a group of people play the game, maybe learn some new techniques while we, as a group, debated different strategies and tactics. I am always interested in different approaches to solving the challenges of the game, and even like to have people critique some of my habits/"policies". I thought the ability to debate ideas and even to defend suggestions would give me a better understanding of the game, and even a better appreciation for my own playing style. I saw some of this in the succession games, as each player tended to put his own spin on the game during their reign, and I thought this would be like that, but with more debate and discussion. I entered the government because the game was ready to start, and the new culture department still had no deputy, so I volunteered, to learn more about this new aspect of Civ3.

I did actually learn a lot from the early discussions regarding dense builds and also watching the planning of the initial american campaign. However, lately it seems we have degenerated into endless squabbling and bickering about procedures, the bureaucrats run the republic now.
"I call for a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor!"
(Oh, sorry, I stayed up late last night watching Star Wars Phantom Menace with my son).
That's what I was hoping for, and where I think we are.

(Edit: The above movie reference is in no way a reflection upon our current president, I think Donsig has done a great job, even though I originally disagreed with him on many issues, he has impressed me with his judgement and attention to detail. I was only caught up in the sentiment that we are getting bogged down).

I was definitely looking for something new when I stumbled across the Demo game, fresh out of the box. To me it was just an idea in someone's head, as I was unaware of the Civ2 Demo game. But the possibilities seemed endless. I love the Game of Civilization, but had grown bored with the original relase. Civ3 just didn't have the playability/enjoyment factor that Civ2 did. But when I found this idea of Civ3 Demo Game, I thought hmmm, not only might this involve my favorite pc game, but I would also be part of the live (although text based) dynamics of a Democracy. I might be part of the driving force that somehow spurs a nation into an empire. I gladly signed up as Cultural Minister, as it seemed to fit.

As far as what I can't do....I guess that would be express myself well enough. Mainly, that's the reason I bowed out as Cultural Minister. As far as Minister material, Justus II has much more to offer than I.

I also agree about the silly power struggles, with the bickering and what not. I guess I should have expected it. We're basically trying to be an art form mimicking real life. So I have to put up with the real life part of it.

I joined so that I could have my opinion taken, and I am fascinated with governments and laws, and this has been a bit of a study in my part. I also thought that If i was hard working I'd get rewarded, perhaps a government position someday. I haven't done that bad, Culture REp and Science Rep, and am very happy that my two original goals have been fulfilled, to help with those 2 things.

Read the first paragraph of Cyc's post above as it reflects my thoughts completely. ;)

I mainly joined for the roleplaying aspect of the game. We imitate real life here (as we see, we are not so bad at it as we also emulate the bad sides of real life). We should allow even more roleplay, though.
It remembers me of times when youths sat around their c64 in groups of 4-8 and played games like "seven cities of gold" or others.
I think the problem at the moment is a problem of speach: some ppl can argue quiete good in english, as it is their native language. These always have an advantage over non-native english speaking citizens in here, especially when it gets to burocratism or making/interpreting rules.

I joined for the same reason I join every game - to try to take over the world!! (my apologies to Pinky & the Brain)

Seriously though, I was at the tail end of my first succession game and had a blast with that. I'd also finished my first "you decide" story game and that was a lot of fun too. I figured that the Demo game was going to be like a massive version of a combination You Decide/Succession game and that it would be a blast to be involved in it. (I was right, too :) )
