I'm not exactly a newbie, but I had some difficulty comprehending the whole HoF competition.

I found the HoF score page here, and the submission form

http://hof.civfanatics.net/

Should this be in the rules thread?

What else am I missing?

Some questions would be:

When did it start and when will it end?
How many people have submitted?
Who should participate?
Is there any advice for newcomers?

When did it start and when will it end?

The HoF was started by JFL_Dragon who moderated it for a while before Aeson took over. Its been around for longer than ive been a member of the site, so thats at least 2 years. I dont know exactly when it started.

The HOF will (hopefully!) never end. There is no time limit for a game like in GOTM, you just play at your own pace and submit a game once completed.

How many people have submitted?

I dont know, perhaps Aeson can tell you how many games are in the current database, but that might not include games that previously dropped off the end of the top 10 scores as better scores came in above them.

Who should participate?

Anyone :) but if you want to challenge the top scores, on ANY level, you better be good :)

Is there any advice for newcomers?

Maximizing Your Score by SirPleb, in the war academy, is essential reading. Other than that I would suggest reading through some of the game threads on the HOF Forum.

There are two basic types of game to play, tiny/small map early conquest or huge map milk run. (there are many others ways to play, any victory condition infact, but those two are the most popular)

Huge map milk run will attain you the highest score, but there is equal competition and glory for getting the earliest finish, the fastest space race, the quickest diplo win, etc, etc. Milking just gets you the biggest score and therefore the highest positions on the league tables.

I don't know how many people do this, but I really just use HOF as a style of play. I use the HOF rules for all my games, and have ever since I discovered this site shortly after being introduced to Civ. The HOF rules are the most challenging and really, most "historically accurate" rules you can play by. And when you win, it's that much more satisfying. When you lose, well, there's always next time. But it's not like Napoleon got a chance to reload his game and redo Waterloo, right? So as a hardcore wannabe world dictator, I play the same way.

The HoF is about making the greatest game score in a given setting and rules.
If you succeed in making all... Sid may want you as his assistant (or so I hope..) :p

For me, it allows me the oppurtunity to play traditional standalone Civ (no mods or scenarios) where I can compete against myself and others (scorewise) on a huge, epic, random map. I don't have to get slogged down in a structured PBEM pace and I can quit as many starting locations as I like.

Bottom line, placing doesn't matter so long as I have fun. My last Monarch run was abyssmal regarding how much potential score I wasted, but I had a blast playing the game.

I have some measure of admiration for HoF players. I have read from this forum for a while, and numerous times have endevoured to attempt my own HoF run, but 'real life' always gets in the way. Furthermore, I usually get bored with individual civ3 games, and want to constantly start new ones with different civ, settings, etc.

I don't think I will ever have the willpower to commit myself to one individual game of civ3. Besides, it would most likely take literally a year for me to complete a HoF submission, because my civ3 playing time is severely limited.

If they ever invent a pill that allows me to function at peak energy status without ever sleeping, I will complete and submit a HoF entry. Until then, I will remain here reading of the HoF and wishing I had the time, patience, and attention span to complete my own HoF entry.

As a professional third shifter, I've found that Vitamin B12 pills, melatonin supplements and protein-based diet shakes to be pretty effective at keeping me up all night in good form. Unfortunatly, once daybreak comes you will crash and really really hard.

I just ab/use marijuana and hashish, but it all goes back to the CIV1 moto -
"morning - No sleep, no eat, must take Washington!" :crazyeye:

I PM'ed Aeson but I'm pretty impatient and this looks as good of a place as any to ask questions.

#1.) If I decide to go after a spaceship win on regent and complete it 2049AD scoring 8,000 pts will I be listed before Darkness' game at 2050Ad eventhough he scored over 22,800 points?
#2.) Is there some sort of record keeping (turnlog) that must be kept for the submission to be valid?

BTW I'm in awe of your work here. You folks are the Gods and Godesses of our game. Congrats and thanks all of the way around. Lurking your threads has done my game a world of good. Also, Thanks for letting SirPleb out of your grasp for a bit to return to GTOM. His presence there has been great. I'd love for any and all of you to take one month to play with the GOTM crew to show us all how it is done. :thanx:

#1: Yes.
(The "Spaceship" table lists by Fastest Finish.......The Score Table [which is the "Premier" Table] lists by score.)

#2: No.
(BUT, if you attach a .txt file on your game it will be accessible to all.[viz. It's downloadable from the HOF Lists])

I returned to the GOTM while "waiting" for the HOF to be updated! (It's been 2.5 months since the last update!)......AND had a blast!

We met in person with SirPleb & "LadyPleb" 3 days ago and I have to tell you....He has a Major-Major grasp of the game and even proposed to write a "final" Conquests patch for Firaxis!.........No word back yet........obviously their top decision-makers are not regulars at CFC!
(That's like someone selling you the winning Lottery ticket for a dollar!)

It seems to me that amongst the "HoF Regulars" that a fast date of finish is much less sought after than High scores. Is this an insiders "rule"?
There's plenty of competition for fastest finishes. The reason you hear so much from us milkers is because we're killing time while our computers go through the AI turns. :D

Actually, when some SGs stop, I think I may make a serious run at pulling a boogaboo in 20k victories, which have been ignored and are something I am rather good at. Well at least up to Emperor. Svar seems to have had the same idea though, as he has the top spot from Chieftan to Regent, and those 1500s ones will be tough to match.

In a game in Monarch where I lost the 4000 BC save, I missed out on the top finish by two turns, and that was only my second attempt at 20k. Well, at least I think I am rather good at them. Maybe they have just been ignored. Anyway, I think fastest finish spots will probably start being taken as more and more people notice the HoF, and there have probably been some submissions over the past couple months.

Maybe I am just dreaming...

Hey Eman, which game did you play? And how did you fare, 'cause I didn't see you in the spoilers....

Yeah, just thought I'd see if all this "practice" at HOF would make it easier to get through a GOTM within a month! ;)
(Darkness, you've set some pretty high standards in the HOF!)

@Darkness: I played GOTM34 which I guess closed yesterday......."How did I do?"........I guess we'll find out pretty soon, when ainwood posts the results..........UNLESS he "eloped" with Aeson!

I'm still, as my title suggests, still a Loyal HOFer at heart! :)

Well, I just have to say that your title also includes "cow", and I always reffered to cattle tiles as "cows" (at least when talking with Schon and my mom..)

Also, off-topic, I have successfully entered a new rented appartment, with NO partners! (Except for Ootchy the dog)
Free at last! Free at last! :D
Not a large place, of course, but enough to civ and baby-sit my dog.

Happy (Jewish) new-year! :goodjob:

@bed_head7 : why o why have you listed me as a 20K HOFer??
I do score, and still on tiny/small, but not culture..

When I said pull a boogaboo, I meant run the gamut (never spelled it before?) from Cheiftan to...well not Sid or Diety, but to Emperor and maybe Demigod in awhile. I am not confident yet that I can even win on Demigod, so fastest finish 20k is a little out my range. But I meant I would try doing in 20k what you have done in Conquest victories. You know very well from all my responses in your thread that I know how you are winning.

O, have I become an expression ?? :king: :goodjob:
Is "run the gamut" an expression??
..and I thought I knew English at a resonable level..

I ran out of maps, and ran mapfinder 12 hours with too high settings.. found 0 maps! stupid me.

It really depends.
I have sumbitted the shortest 20k victory on my first try which took 10 hours, and my current at about halfway is only a couple hours old.
Same with quickest conquest on tiny and small maps on different settings.
There are tons of settings which allow for really quick games in the HoF.
Find the one you like!
