What's the best promotion for siege weapons?

Cats are better than trebs in the field due to their higher base strength, however cats are available long before trebs and can be used with swords/elephants/ect to take down an opponent in the late Classical.

yea i meant once they are both available. if i only have cats available and i need to attack cities, i obviously upgrade them with cr.

if you're not attacking a city, isn't catapult better anyway? (and cheaper) dunno if i'm missing something, but generally i upgrade cats with extra collateral or drill, and trebs with city raider instead. unless absolutely necessary, i dont use cats for attacking cities, and i dont use trebs for attacking outside of cities.

Field cat>treb
City treb>cat
upgrading to cannon treb>>>>cat

but usually you will be attacking a city, unless it's MP

I use both cats and trebs. Neither get used in the field much. The occasional city defender cats, for those lousy backstabbers, are drill promoted.

cats get barrage I, II - these are purely members of the crack suicide squad. 2 per city as necessary or needed.

trebs get barage I and precision I - I take enough of these to smash the defenses pronto. I hate waiting to attack with the SoD any longer than absolutely needed.

This will probably have to change in future. I don't run into many castles till later in the game, when it doesn't matter, (noble/prince).

Generally it is the top defender who eats the most :hammers: and CR tends to be the best for taking that guy down. One exception I will put out there is for hideous mismatches; e.g. Arty vs LBs/muskets or air+cannons vs no AA/most anything; cannons + airships vs LBs might even be viable. In these cases you are going to win and drill can make you roll much faster. This is mainly an issue where you face high level insta-upgrades which can turn a cakewalk into a slow crawl (e.g. you teched steel, built up cannons while teching physics for the airships/GSc, against some AIs this is a cake walk ... unless they tech rifling or mil sci before you can cripple them).
