What's the key to trading food resources?

I am a newbie at Civ4 (but not Civ3), and I have a question about how traded food resources are utilized. I traded an AI civ to get rice, and since then I have rice showing up in each of my cities resource box. The box shows a one healthy beside it, but if I hover the pointer over the rice symbol, it says Rice: +1 food, +1 healthy (with farm). But as I look at a city's food bar I see that the only food the city is producing is on its own real estate, minus of course the food needed to feed the population. I cannot account for this one food that the resource box infers I am (or should be) getting. I can confirm that the one healthy is being utilized by the city. Does this mean that when you trade for a food resource, you don't get any food, only health and (presumably) happiness?

I hate to bother the forum with a question this basic, but I could not find a way to search this vast forum to locate a specific phrase, like..."trading food resources". Doing so gets an error message. I could only get the forum to search on a collection of single words (presumably a logical OR mechanism). Anyone know a way to search the forum for a restricted phrase?

Try a Civ IV forum. This one is for CivRev.

The UI is confusing.

+1 food is the tile bonus for rice being present (so grasslands with unimproved rice is 3 food instead of 2). This is for tiles in the BFC only, not traded resources.

Welcome to the forums.:band:

You are quite right. When you trade resources, you don't get any food, shield, or gold bonuses, only happiness, health, or, in the case of strategic resources, the ability to build units or faster wonders.

Paradigm Shifter is right, the way it is explained is very confusing and, in fact, incorrect. Don't worry, you're not the first to ask this question.
