I mean you can pay overtime to get a cathedral built, but try and pay them to build Newtons and they dont want to know about it ?

Just seems to me a bit unrealistic. Im just curious why they didnt allow this as an option, except with great leaders of course.

I guess because the richest civ will always be able to rush build the wonder as soon as they get the Tech, thus giving them an even larger advantage and then they'll probably be more capable of doing the same with the next wonder and so on.
I reckon it's just a case of game balance, after all I'd be well annoyed if the biggest AI civ who was ahead in the Tech race just got the GW the turn after it was available and I was several turns away from getting that Tech. This would soon spiral out of control until only one civ would have the majority of GW's and everyone else had none.

Play balance issue....mostly to help the A.I. is my guess. I remember how easy it was to beat the A.I. to most Wonders in Civ2.

Ah I see.

They could make them very expensive to buy though. Where the player or the AI would really have to think whether its worth the cash ?

They could just add a "Build multiplier" for buildings and wonders. It would specify how much gold 1 shield would cost. It could be like 10 for wonders but only 2 or 4 for regular improvements.

Maybe they think that something as wonderful as a wonder should be built slowly to enhance its "wonderful-ness".

Building Wonder is like going to the moon. If you rush scientists to work overtime on that, accident may happen. Scientists can't be creative if they are lack of sleep.;)

Rushing is one thing, but we also can't stockpile caravans anymore, nor do we get warnings another civ is about to complete a Wonder, nor can we even save a fraction of the wasted production as Wealth.

What this in REALITY does is HELP the stronger civ as they are now the ones who can risk starting a Wonder; smaller civs trying to catch up cannot afford to lose several hundred shields.

So the rich get richer.

Can you imagine the Sisten Chapel if Michalangelo (sp) had a lot of help with his paintings? It wouldn't be the "Wonder" that it is today :) It would just be a cathedral.

One issue is that if you start building a palace or small wonder before you researched the tech required for the wonder, you get a jump start for the wonder. Pretty similar to Caravan rushing in Civ2 really.
