What's with the view?

This may be digressing, but why the heck is the viewpoint in all the Civ games from an isometric POV? Seems to me that it would be a lot easier to play(and especially to make maps for) a simple, regular grid. Post your thoughts on this. I love the Civ games, I just never quite understood the viewpoint.
 
Which leads to the question, why bother making the game look 3d? I mean, if the game is for strategy, shouldn't it focus more on the strategy than the looks? Just a thought.
 
i think diehard civs agree with you, draver, but Meier and Co. knew that they had to change with the times in order to keep their new game from looking outdated. blame the look of "Age of Empires" if you must. after that, it seemed like every stategy game went isometric.

i have to admit, tho, it does look pretty cool. especially the landforms and the little fortresses... :)
 
I have move your thread from user created maps to the civ general forum. Only thread with the approriate type file attached or linked should be posted in the finished files sub forums. Questions should be posted in an appropriate existing thread or in civ3 general or in cive creation forums.
