I've been thinking that I haven't seen a discussion on what order to build things in new cities. Obviously it would depend on the situation, but I find that I often just follow the same order while getting new cities 'up and running' and productive. I usually go:

Obelisk-->Market-->Elder Council-->Gambling House-->State religion temple-->Money Changer-->Tax Office-->Forge-->Alchemy Lab-->Library-->Training yard type building (Mage guild, Stable, etc)-->Units

Mix happiness and health buildings per taste. Units can obviously be built anywhere in the process. This isn't supposed to be a hard and fast rule, just what you prioritize.

What's you're order?

Well, it really depends...

If not Creative, than in 90% cases first an Obelisk (other cases being founding culture-generating temple with a Priest or from some reasons I can delay expanding borders).

Than often Elder Council or Market followed by Library or Money Changer - depends if I need to focus on science or money. I try to specialize cities, so in troop-building cities I would build rather buildings that enable troops than boosting economy.

3th-5th building is some Temple, not necessarily State Religion's.

Happiness and health buildings as they become needed for city growth.

I try to make my 2nd or 3rd city a city dedicated solely for unit production. Other cities usually don't produce units other than settlers or workers.

Generally the training yard (once you research the tech) will be first or second after obelisk depending on situation.

When you are playing on immortal difficulty with raging barbarians, you can be sure that you will be wiped out fast if you don't have a decent army. Usually Military buidlings first, then research buidlings, happiness/health building. Eco(except market) buildings i usually don't build or build last since i run at 80% science most of the time an benefit little from them.
