So I've been playing FFH for a couple weeks now and I've found that my typical Marathon game speed is almost unbearable. I mean don't get me wrong. I like things being around for a longer period of time before there are changes, but Marathon in FFH2 is exceptionally long. Perhaps it was the "normal" gamespeed being tweaked to assuage issues of out growing techs so quickly, but it definitely plays differently than regular Civ.

What game speed have you found to be suitable for you? Are you like me and a marathon player that has officially been shocked out of it as a result of the pace of FFH2?

Yup, marathon is long. Used to do huge map marathon games, but the loading times just killed me. I go standard epic now. Better this way.

I've usually played quick, only because I work, have 2 kids, a wife, and a life....I usually only have enough time to play for an hour or two (usually late at night when everyone else is sleeping), and I don't want to wait two real life years to see an Archmage. :)

I play marathon with every civilization represented. With Fall Further, I believe it's up to 29 civilizations. Starting the game takes a bit, but after that, the load times aren't too bad.

Marathon. FfH is such an epic game that it feels wrong for units and combat to be downgraded via quicker game play. Also, there's a sheer sense of *enormity* from marathon play...love it!

Normal speed, mostly. Sometimes I'll speed some games up though. FFH2 can be too freakin' long...

Don't you quickly hit "build any unit in one turn" on quick (and even normal). For some reason that really annoys me, I feel like more expensive units should take longer to build and there should be a point to buildings like the heroic epic, and command posts. It makes for weird logic, like the best place to build the HE is in a low production city.

I can see that on normal at the end of the game. I don't have a major problem with building a non-"national limit" or "hero" unit in one (outdated/weak) to three (cutting edge) turns. This does make military towns viable still though because while your lower production towns focus on things to help raise their production this town can produce the units they were going to faster (although I do think that HE should be in perhaps your third town production level town just so you can assign your top two to wonders/rituals).

My issue is that this is true even on marathon in the late game. The early game though is where 30 turns to create a warrior is quite often a way to a quick death. It'd be great if they could scale the initial stuff a bit better I guess is my biggest issue. Perhaps a modmod that cuts the production of Tier I buildings and units (granary, smokehouse, mounument, warrior, scout, worker, etc.) by a fair amount while upping the end tier things as well.

Until I read this threat I did normal. Now tried something a little different... Huge map, fractal, Advanced Start, No Settlers, 6 AIs, Marathon. Get some serious exploration in there... enough tribal villages and lairs to go around. Interesting.

Think maybe Epic would be better for it though... marathon's just too much.

Would the AI survive that? Seem to me the AI has problems with handling the number of barbs showing up by lowering the number of players. :/

I play on normal speed, myself. Used to be Epic/Marathon in Vanilla, then Quick for a while in FFH, but now I have settled on normal. Though I almost always play small maps, so I guess there would not be much use for marathon there.

I used to play nothing but marathon with Civ 4 simply to avoid the out of control obsolescence rate.

But it's not so bad in FFH2. I'd LIKE to at least try epic, but for some reason it takes a long time to calculate turns past 300. Later turns usually average about 10-20 seconds, with one game going into absolutely ridiculous 1-2 minute territory. No way would I slog through that on epic/marathon.
