When do you decide on victory type?

Hi all,
If this has been discussed at length in another post please feel free to point me. I looked and searched for posts w/o much luck.

How do you determine what victory type you will pursue? This can be in Civ 5 and what you think you are going to try and do in Civ6.

By the Civ you pick before you start due to the Civ (IE domination with Khan)?
By the location you find in early game?
Pre-determined just because that is the way you want to try and win?

Any suggestions would be great. I like to pick a random civ and get started and then see what happens before picking a victory path but sometimes I feel pigeon holed into the victory type because of the civ I got.

Thanks for reading.

In Civ5, many of the bonuses were permanent, so the planning was longterm. You had to plan for a victory condition from the start.

In Civ6, not only are the Civs more flexible, but circumstances will change during the game that might entice you to switch strategies. I would think you should only pick a Victory Condition as you approach one significantly more than the rest...but for much of the game you'll be roughly the same distance from each.

We of course have no idea, and I don't think there's much we can do beyond the speculation I just listed.

In Civ V, I often secured a path to whatever victory that I wanted buy the medieval era.

For Civ VI, if all goes as they say it will, choosing a VC to pursuit will be a lot deeper. Certain civs may have advantages towards specific VCs, but also factors like the maps and other civs could make the game more dynamic.
