When does AI gives up a city?

Be at war with him and punish him bad. He will give you citie(s) for peace.

The amount he will pay when you fight an AI depends on your succes in the war, your relative power and if any of you have units ready to take a city next turn.

How those factors affect the price they pay should be obvious enough.

Right on :goodjob: ;) . I've had the AI give me 4 cities at one time  ,
I was really surprised, though they had been :whipped: severely :D .

Whenever I go to war, I usually manage to take a few cities as tribute for peace. ;)

i think they way the AI acts when it comes to city trading is weird..

you've been at war. you have won. in peace negotiations say you ask for 2 size 1 cities. you advisor tells you 'we're getting close to a deal here'. then if you put anything, ANYTHING on your side, like a tech, gold, EVEN ANOTHER CITY! (even if that city is better! ) they will always refuse. your advisor will say ' they would never accept such a deal'. WHY? doesnt make sence really.

in SMAC these things were possible, i have never understod why they obviously hardcoded this 'dont trade cities for anything ever' behaviour in civ3. city trading worked in SMAC did it not? :/

sid meier's alpha centauri. came out after civ2 sometime. you play on alpha centauri you know the place you launch your spaceship to in civ. so its civ on an alien world really. VERY good game.

It was possible with v1.0 of vanilla civ, but was soon removed with one of the early patches.Reason is to avoid possible exploits.Of course it creates odd situations - but creating an non-exploitive trade system with good AI is not so simple.

I think another way is to have like 40,000 gold and offer that.
But the best way is to have troops at their doorstep.

In anything but unpatched Vanilla, that's a sure way to NOT get a city. As Gargantutron said, the AI won't give cities for gold. In unpatched Civ 3 you can pretty much buy up an AI's cities. The fix for that exploit may have been a little extreme, but it works.

heres a little tip I learned... if it is early enough in the game and u have only discovered one other civ heres what I do. continuosly war on the other civ and the second peace is offered, take it, he will usually give u 1 or 2 small cities for tribute. once fortified, wage war again, and once peace is offered they will usually give another few cities. if ur lucky techs will also come with these cities. However if an other civ is found and u feel like keeping ur rep up, or the little bit u can in this game. Dont do this! But this is just how I work, i do the same later in the game if everybody is at war with a common enemy. If this dosent appeal to u, dont do it

Usually when the AI gives up a city it is on a small spit of land far away from their main territory, surrrounded by swamps and generally useless.

Often their useless small cities are the only ones you can get in a peace deal. I get frustrated when I'm close to annihilating the whole civ and it's not willing to give up any of its last few cities.

i was the Romans playing on a Huge Southern European Map. i was at war with the Indians and used 8 Knights to conquer about their entire civilization except they had left 6 cities that were small and unproductive with little if any defenders in them. i signed peace and they gave 5 to me along with luxuries and something else. also what i find weird i was also at war with Persia and persia was across the Mediterrainan Sea and i had a couple of oil colonies for the future their. they attacked my 1 city that had a spearman in it and destroyed it. later maybe 20 turns i signed peace with them for one of their cities although they had been winning the war down their

maybe the AI was smart enought to see how powerful i was compared to the entire world and was in a good position to take over them :p

It would be interesting to see if we could develop some sort of formula. Or at least some qualitive results. For example, apparently having troops right next to one of their cities makes them more willing to give up cities. Is there a limit to how much they can be intimidated...i.e., given enough units standing next to their capital is it possible to demand a city that is a part of their core?

i've only gotten cities when i've either:

1. 'demanded it or pay the consequences'

or

2. exchanged it for a peace treaty

an odd thing though is, i can't trade MY cities. i can offer ALL my cities for ONE tech and they will still refuse, i guess i can see the point because its easy to exploit a city trade because the cities are emptied of troops and you can just take them back, but its still pretty weird.
