When Fast Units Don't Retreat!

Sometimes I have this happen to me, say, one time I was the Indians and was conquering France. I attacked one of their cities with Cavalry and they had a pikeman defending the city. When my Cavalry's health bar was red, he didn't retreat, and the pikeman ended up killing him!

Has this ever happened to anyone? Can anyone EXPLAIN this?

Yup. If you play the game without any patch, your horseman, knight, cavalry, or tank will always retrieve from battle if it has one red bar of health left. However, if you install any of the patch, it will retrieve at random.

Of course, now I have to bomb my enemy units to kingdom come before I charge my cavalries.:) Either ways, it's no big deal. We just have to build more artileries or bombers.

Yep retreat now is only a probability of occuring, not a certainty. The chance for retreat is dependent on the unit's experience level.

Ahhh! I see now. You learn something new every day! ;)

Not entirely accurate, if the defender is down to one hitpoint your fast unit will keep attacking even if it gets down to one hitpoint itself.

You can modify the retreat % in the editor.

If its your units that are not retreating then it sucks but if its the enemy's troops then its great. It can get very annoying when your units survive the attack but don't get any kills and really means that you need to outnumber the other civ.

I think you can just use the editor without any patches but I am not sure...
