When I capture a city, it has no improvements in it.

I just went to war with Russia since I was behind in tech by alot, and they were the closest to me. The advisor said things like "Their army outnumbers ours." "They are disdainful of our culture." so I supposed they have alot of buildings that contain culture (Temples, Cathedrals.). I go to war and quickly cut off their iron resource that is very close my border.

Once they run out of what seems to be an infinite number of swordsmen, I move in with superior knights. They can now only build archers and spearmen while I have knights and swordsmen, so I capture alot of their cities. I look at the cities and I see that none of them have any buildings in them! Infact, only one city had anything in it: Their capitol had one barracks! What? How were they able to expand their borders w/o culture? Why did my advisor say that their culture is better than mine? Why won't the AI build any buildings?

This was on regent, btw.

culture-buildings are always destroyed when a city changes owners... only buildings like barracks, banks, hospitals etc. Could remain standing.
(always or sometimes... i don't know?)

majk-iii is correct. All culture buildings (temple, libraries) and small wonders are destroyed when you capture a city. The only exception to this is wonders which are only destroyed if you raze the city. Aquaducts and hospitals are never destroyed. In regards to the other buildings, barracks, granaries, banks, ect... there is a chance that these buildings may be destroyed when you capture the city. Off hand, I am not sure what the percentage is.

this really isnt true. when i capture cities i get things like a barracs.

hu? in what way is this different from what the others posted? please explain!

I don't think that barracks, marketplaces, banks, or graneries are ever destroyed by taking a city. Sometimes the AI sells them so they can rush more units though.

Aqueducts and hospitals can't be sold so they are always there.

barracks don't generate culture so they have a chance at remaining.

Sometimes the AI will sell these improvements if they need cash, but they do get destroyed on occassion upon capture.
