To Orc: Getting a headstart! (joke)
Well, I certainly opened a can of worms there!
Now, come on, let's be brutality honest here - you guys can't HONESTLY tell me you've NEVER saved the game at 4000BC?
If you have no intention of reloading it, why save it?
You can't HONESTLY say that you've NEVER saved the game at 4000BC, immediately built your first city, then realised if you'd have just moved one square 'that' way, you'd have had CATTLE (or whatever) within your city radius? Can you? And then reloaded...
I don't believe you can say that you NEVER have.
I can state that I have NEVER done that because I've scouted around first before building my first city. However, if you HAVE reloaded your 4000BC save, then you're as bad as I was.
Let me re-iterate (and put slightly better, although I no longer justify my actions): the only reason I did it (for months on end, admittedly) is because (don't you hate analysing yourself) I'm a tidy person and hate to do things twice. I also hate 'wasting space' and by doing the 'reccy' in the past, I've quickly sussed out how best to fill (not utilise) the immediate land mass presented to me.
OK, I now feel like a cheat and have started playing the game without doing it. I shan't go back to doing it either but it feels like such a waste and a lack of planning.
I have to say that I do appreciate scouts more now.
