When to move the initial settler?

To Orc: Getting a headstart! (joke)

Well, I certainly opened a can of worms there!

Now, come on, let's be brutality honest here - you guys can't HONESTLY tell me you've NEVER saved the game at 4000BC?
If you have no intention of reloading it, why save it?

You can't HONESTLY say that you've NEVER saved the game at 4000BC, immediately built your first city, then realised if you'd have just moved one square 'that' way, you'd have had CATTLE (or whatever) within your city radius? Can you? And then reloaded...

I don't believe you can say that you NEVER have.

I can state that I have NEVER done that because I've scouted around first before building my first city. However, if you HAVE reloaded your 4000BC save, then you're as bad as I was.

Let me re-iterate (and put slightly better, although I no longer justify my actions): the only reason I did it (for months on end, admittedly) is because (don't you hate analysing yourself) I'm a tidy person and hate to do things twice. I also hate 'wasting space' and by doing the 'reccy' in the past, I've quickly sussed out how best to fill (not utilise) the immediate land mass presented to me.

OK, I now feel like a cheat and have started playing the game without doing it. I shan't go back to doing it either but it feels like such a waste and a lack of planning.

I have to say that I do appreciate scouts more now.

Of course I keep the 4000BC save. One day I might, just might, finally acheive a game good enough to get in the CFC Hall of Fame again. I have one that would romp in but without the appropriates saves it is not worth making the submission. I will never make that mistake again

I save my 4000bc.sav but only because EVERY game I play is an attempt for the CFC-HOF where a 4000bc.sav is a submission requirement.

Saving 4000bc for a reload, much less any reload that wasn't due to a bug or crash, is up to you if you're playing solo, but in the HOF, GOTM, etc, it's considered cheating...well, because it is.

I agree and that's my point.

I reckon that there are a lot of players out there kidding themselves that they don't cheat (and they are 'hollier than thou', when in fact 'one person's standard play, is another person's cheat.' You get me? You might think you're playing it properly, but someone else thinks you're not because you do such-and-such (whatever that may be). And yet to someone else it isn't...

Anyway, I'm trying to get PTW v1.21f loaded on my PC so that I can join the fun in the GotM now. I'm an old hand when it comes to CIV in all its guises but new to gaming against everyone else. I've read the thread about the GotM and thrilled that there appears to be checks on the number of saves, et cetera. So I will be able to play properly and get verified that I have.

Anyway, can we play a different record now?

Forgive my earlier posts tone, it seems to have come across differently than I meant. All I was trying to say was that whatever habits you have playing solo are up to you. As long as you're enjoying yourself, that's the whole point of the game!

It's the same for me, except that I also play GOTM and then the 4000BC save games are posted by cracker and we can download them (so in that case I also have a 4000BC save)....
