When to use each government

Wow, thank you for all the replies. I guess I never really thought about a second revolution before (and what that all entails). I have been using Republic a lot lately, but everytime I make the switch my treasury drops noticably (in my current game I went from +1 or +2 gpt to -21 gpt). Is there a recurring reason why this is happens?

I would post a save, but I don't know how to  If anybody could explain this, that would be great! I am looking in my Conquests folder, but I am not seeing anything in my Saves folder (all I have is an Auto folder within that leads to nothing).

Generally, the two biggest reasons for an economy drop when switching to Republic are 1) not enough roaded tiles and 2) too many units. Something else to look out for is how much you're spending on science - you can have a lower science percentage and still be researching techs faster than in a Monarchy, so you can drop the slider some if you want.

RE: Saves: to upload a save, press the "manage attachments" button in the "Additional Options" section when you're posting, and browse for the file in question. However, I don't think I can help with not finding anything in your saves folder; all your .sav files should be in the Saves folder, unless they're being hidden somehow.

If you are using Vista, they are probably being saved elsewhere. Click on "compatibility files" to see them.

This is actually my first post, but I actually have something to contribute!

I usually play on a Huge map, all random as a random tribe on Monarch. However, I got trounced on the last game as japanese, so I'm playing them again.

As far as governments, my favorite is Democracy, and that is because I like the peaceful builder route. The big disadvantage is the WW you experience, especially if the opponent won't even talk to you!

I think there are two main factors to determine your optimal government. One is your overall strategy (conquer the world, culture victory, etc...) The other is the way the game is turning out. If you find war after war, democracy will probably not work. If you find you have no resources (that's me every freakin' time) you may need war more often. (I've tried trading, but those AIs are too greedy.)

Yes, IF you can maintain the 'perfect' neighbour act and have enough land to be productive, you can pull it off without war. But you will need some units too, or they WILL attack you.
Do you think it has anything to do with you being japanese?
