When watching foreign movies, dubbed or subtitled?

The crowd here at CFC is, at least I presume, exposed pretty regularly to foreign films, being that a lot of us are of the esoteric variety within society.

That said, how do you like to watch your foreign language flims?

Me personally I'm a subtitle purist. English dubbing on most movies sucks major balls. The only foreign movie I've seen thus far with a decent/good english dub would have to be Princess Mononoke.

Subtitles allow you to get into the cadence and rhythm of the language, and make for a more immersive experience than seeing voices and mouths not match up.

Subtitles, with the addition that in order for me to take the requisite time and attention to watch one it must be VERY good (e.g. City of God)

I find dubbing very off-putting as I'm continually watching the lips of the actors and wondering why they don't match the sound.

Usually subtitles, but it depends on the movie. If 300 had been foreign language I would have preferred dubbing.

Since I want to learn the language itself. I perfer having subtitles. Especialy in Anime films.

Pretty much how I see it. I get the same way if a DVD sound goes off-synch even in English-speaking films. So it's subtitles for me.

It does mean I'm not so bothered by dubbing in animes/foreign cartoons, though I try to stick to subtitles there too.

Ah, the joy of stopping the DVD in a room full of people who havn't noticed it go out of synch and spending five mins finding the spot where you left off to a chorus of people calling you a ponce Me too.

Bartlby - Anything that makes monster movies more abserd is better. A comedy accents dub FTW. Kind of the exception that proves the rule though.

Subtitles. It's one reason for finnish ppl's quite good english skills in general - almost everything in telly/movies is subtitled. Disney films are an exception, but on those finnish dubs tend to be very good.

Im not a fan of either, but subtitles are worse.

If I want to read my movies/anime I would pick up a book/manga. But I would like to learn the language so I can watch it without subtitles in the orignal language.

I usually will look at some review if is dubbing good. Normally I prefer dubbing.
