Movies in a different language - dubbing or subtitles?

Sorry to rain on your parade, but this so-called "anime" is really just Japanese cartoons.

I know, I just wanted to make the separation to make the point more clear.
If I had said just "cartoons", the message that I also mean anime wouldn't neccesarily gone through as obiviously as it does with saying them both separately.


Some people don't even know the word anime. And some hard-core anime fans get insulted if one calls anime "just japanese cartoons".

I personally also want to clearly differentiate those two. Anime and [western] cartoons are two totally different things, even tho the globalization has melted anime and cartoons closer together...



When you say anime, most think of anime.
When you say cartoon, most think of Looney Tunes and such.

Subtitles always when it's a live action film. And Subtitles most times when it's Japanese anime or other foreign language production unless the rare chance where i hear both the dubb and the original voice and prefer the dub quality . Some times i prefer the dub because i find the japanese accent more annoying than the English language.

Sorry for this, but one can correctly guess your opinion on dubbing/subtitles from a glance of your English.

Perhaps if you watched more subtitled stuff, you'd not make so many mistakes.

Hmm. Then I need more English subtitles than Czech ones.
I realy hate watching subtitles. Eysore and problems with concentration on movie. Only solution for me are old movies like Metropolis? or comedies with Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy where are subtitles after action

Yeah, but Japanese cartoons are, you know, still cartoons. Made in a different country. You could have easily said: American and Japanese cartoons. Come on now.

1. If they don't know the word and you knew it, why did you continue on and use it?

2. I doubt we have any hardcore people here, I think they're too busy watching the latest episode of Super Fun Time Happy Show or whatever.

The cool thing with subtitles is that if you're slow at reading, it helps you read faster. If you're like me you get all the subtitles in one quick glance at the bottom and then you can look at the action. Heck, I bet it improves reading speed anyway because I know the faster I read them, the more action I can watch on screen.
