I wonder what sort of units they are, the rebels or whatever that happens when you go below -20?

It only happened to me once, long time ago, so are they just barbs or could you get more xp from them?

The rebels are just barbs, so no more XP after 30.
The amount of rebels is linked to the amount of cities you have.

There's rebels in Civ 5 o.O SINCE WHEN!? I never knew that xD! (that's what I get for playing on easier difficulties)

Actually I haven't had them showing up even though I usually play on emperor or immortal. If you manage your happiness decently, the rebels will never show up. Isn't it like -20 happiness when they start spawning?

During a domination game, I took a whole bunch of cities in a peace deal and ended up with happiness under -20 for quite awhile. I had a group of 4 barbarian anti-aircraft guns spawn, and later 4 attack helicopters. No xp for killing them, but they did spawn next to a CS so I got a little rep for one that attacked them.

I've been as bad as -91 in happiness at Emperor level. That's what happens when you conquer a bunch of cities in a hurry, before the resistance ends and you can build courthouses. It took about 30 turns of concerted effort to get above -20.

The good news is that if you've opened the Honor tree, you get culture points for killing the rebels.

One other point: barbs/rebels will never be units that require a resource. No barbarian/rebel swordsmen or tanks, but you will find barbarian/rebel riflemen, anti-aircraft guns, and destroyers.

You sure? I swear I had helicopter gunships spawn, and they require aluminum.

I play on prince and I've never had it happen either.

I've never seen a barbarian or rebel unit that required a resource. Here's the Barbarian thread from the War Academy to back that up:

See 2nd paragraph under the heading 'What are barbarians and what do they do?':

"These units can be as advanced as the most advanced player's most advanced units, however there are no barbarian units that use strategic resources (e.g. no barbarian Giant Death Robots)."

I wonder if I should try a Montezuma game going for culture? Build half a dozen cities quickly, selling off all luxuries and never build anything that can make my people happy. Make some strong units that can defend each city, maybe 2 per each and when borders expand too much go for the great wall. I can probably not buy any CS, since their luxes will improve happiness....hmmm.

Gonna try it tonight on lower level, maybe Prince or King to see if it's viable.

I have to figure out a good map for this, maybe just pangaea. All depends on how often these rebels spawn, I suppose or in worst case there are always AI-players that can give culture too, might need some of their cities to stay at a good negative level of happy. :)

Right, playing monty now and at turn 64, I have 6 cities and my unhappiness is -13. Not good enough.

I didn't play pangaea, but chose fractal and it seems like I'm on a little continent with Cathy. Even better in my opinion. So I might build 2 more cities and then take Russia, that should put me in the -40 at least?

I have 2 barbcamps on raging barbs and archers and a warrior at hand all time, the others 2 archers and 3 warriors will take care of the rebels, until I can afford more troops.

Which means, I have to build frigging triremes to find other ppl, but they give lower c-points and can take forever to kill just one unit.

So what will happen next? I have no idea, but running an empire on negative gold is a bad choice. :)

At turn 87 and the frigging game won't let me build more settlers!

So, I have only one neighbour and can't build another city.

What a BONG-ride that decision was!!!! You f-ing morons that built this game, I so HATE YOU!!!.

So, now what I do to get to -20?

Maybe shake it up a bit , getting soft and plant 4-5 settlers in the same turn?

What else can I do?

The game won't let you settle if you're past -10, iirc. Either kill off Cathy and never build courthouses or... manage it just enough so you're over the edge and let CS relationships dwindle after? Hmm.

Or create a special scenario to experiment it.. i.e block of Catherine's (or AI's) place and then don't add a single CS and luxury, and EXPAND EXPAND EXPAND! You could even turn off Social Policies.

I've won a cultural victory with Montezuma at King level on a fractal map. I employed a primarily domination-win type of strategy: go forth and conquer. I adjusted my strategy to put more emphasis on killing as many enemy units as possible, building more cultural buildings, and choosing more cultural social policies. There is tremendous irony in this approach: slaughtering your way to a cultural victory. :goodjob: Gotta love it!

I had rebel tanks spawn when I stayed on about -20 for too long, so pretty sure they can be resource units, or at least back then as it's a pretty old game (possibly 1.0 even), from another game where I was -50 I recall rebels spawning much faster, so I think the rebel spawning works like a counter, if your at -20 you'll need 5 turns to get to 100, on -50 only 2.
