I have my own rule, that I allow myself to restart twice, and then I must play the map I get.

For me it's Victoria. Every time I have tried to play England, I get a starting position in which there is no body of water in sight in any direction. I've given up trying to play that Civ, except as an exercise in frustration. . .

Placement of your first units can be a real lottery. Often a restart is better than trying to slug your way to mediocrity.

As the Maya restart the map 50 times before settling your first city.

Yep. I've played Rome quite a bit and the iron is nearly always a problem - not a problem for my neighbours I notice!
