Has anyone ever seen an enemy carrier? I never see them what so ever. Sometimes I will see a bomber over the ocean, but that is it. Any body know why we don't see them?

I haven't in civ2

In civ I am sure -memory- that they loved bombarding my shores and dying due to crap stats in attack when they ever did appear hehe

I've always assumed the game designers could not get the AI to synchronize carriers and aircraft to the degree that the planes wouldn't run out of fuel over the ocean somewhere.. >>insert sounds of engine sputtering here........<<. Same with Civ II. I've not seen an AI naval air wing in any Civ game I've played.

Maybe in Civ III.....

I thought about that only two days ago...In all my years of playing civ1, never have I seen one. But I don't think it's pure sync. problem since the AI could always cheat.

True, that. I'm sure you guys already know about the computer's trireme tactics... basically computer triremes don't have to stay close to land because Microprose couldn't figure out how to make them smart enough to do that.

I'm guessing the same was true with carriers, but there's no cop-out I can think of. What are they going to do, make it so that the planes never run out of fuel?? That would be outrageous!

On the subject of carriers, though, you don't really need them at all, except in a few special cases. Usually I find that planes are in a low ratio to other units in my military. Say, if I have an offensive military of 50 units (not including my city defense units), then 5 of those might be planes. Planes are just so akward and useless, and EXPENSIVE... It's a rare case when I ever have 8 to fill a carrier, and the carriers are expensive too. Usually I can find some other way around it. Like I just only use my planes against nearby targets (it's amazing how many enemies you cna find within 8 squares if you go diagonal). I don't want to attack some civ on the other side of the world anyway— I have local troubles to worry about! Occasionally I've used them to hold nukes. Did you know that if you set off a nuke over water, the water doesn't get polluted? That's right! Fill a carrier with nukes and put it right in the middle of the ocean. Every turn, send the nukes out to half their fuel level and attack any fleets you find. You can cover a radius of 8 with this. And the best part is they will never get together enough ships to break through your nuke network because if they group their ships up in a little convoy (which they always do, the spit-dribbling morons), you can take out the whole convoy with one nuke. It covers 9 squares and no pollution and the best part is they never lose. Sure, you lose the nuke, but it's a calculated risk and your not playing any chances.

Ok, that went on a little longer than I had planned... oh well.

I extensively use bombers because they are quite a strong unit, the AI typically don't build fighters, and the rules of the game are stupid enough to allow on to put a city under siege with bombers.
However, I prefer conquering cities to use as air bases for my planes, rather than have a carrier. The only time I use a carrier is when I want to nuke the capital of the enemy and conquer it in one turn.

Surprisingly YES!
I've played a Civ1 game yesterday (f**ing game, stuck me till 6am, cf Pollution thread:mad<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> in Emperor mode and I saw the comp using trireme, carrier and bomber. No fighter spotted, though. It was the Egyptians. They also had nuke but they seemed to enjoy much more bomber. I saw 2 of their carriers near my coasts (not at war with me but with the French) and their bombers enjoyed attacking Paris.

So yes, the computer uses carriers. Rarely but it does. This is the 1st time I can see that happening. It usually prefers nukes...

Addedoops forgot to say that was a Macintosh version, although I was playing it on a Macintosh emulator... on a PC laptop!

In all the years I played Civ1 I only saw an AI Civ with a carrier once. It was the Zulus in a game played at Emperor level on a map of the world. They rarely moved it out of port and didn't use any aircraft from it. They appeared to be using it as a defensive unit for the city.

TTG, I dont know bout CIv 1, but in CIv 2, the AI doesnt bother about fueling its aircraft - in fact, it dont do many things by the book. But I sure you know that already

And for the record, the AI couldn't properly use a carrier if its' life depended on it. Perhaps that it loses so much.

On the planes being uless? have you ever combined carreris with paratroppers? just dont go to close with the carrier, the AI seems to love curise missles

Yes the AI have no idea that Triremes sink in high sea and the planes can stay in the air and attack forever therefore they don't need a carrier.

Well even the AI cheats like wild we beat them all the time. So you see human brain and creativeness will always prevail over blatant AI cheating and calculating.

Humans are always better :D

neither have i

hmm.. in the SNES version, I've never seen enemy aircraft in the air longer than they should be. Fighters always return on the same turn, and Bombers always return on the second turn. Although maybe the ai still does cheat there and I just haven't seen it yet. =P
