I guess another advantage of smaller armies is less unit management. it would be fair annoying in late game in Civ3 when you had to control and move dozens and dozens of different units for your blitzkrieg.
Because units are going to be limited and expensive, defending individual cities may not be practical. Your forces will be required to defend national borders instead.
That's why finding a choke point, building a fort and defending it with a strong defensive unit backed by a ranged unit, will be like finding gold.
Trench warfare and extended fortifications like the Maginot Line to make a comeback until the advent of the bomber and blitzkrieg. It really is going to be much more like how real wars were fought.
