Where be the Rum? Or, the Adventures of Thunderbrush the Pyrate - A Sid Meier's Pirates AAR.

Ahoy Mateys!

This is an AAR of Sid Meier's Pirates. Like alot of real pirate ships, this AAR be a democracy of sorts, the idea being that I will play the game as per the wishes of the 'crew', and then post the ensuing catastrophies here for everyone's amusement.

The crew:

Quartermaster - Kan' Sharuminar
Boatswain - Till
Boatswain's Mate - Swein Forkbeard
Helmsman - Captain2
Chief Gunner - Nodikus
Gunner's Mate - Shylock
Gunner's Second Mate- e350tb
Carpenter - Gilder
Carpenter's Mate - Nuclear Kid
Surgeon - Berrie
Chief of Port Plunderin' - Grenadier PrinceScamp
First Mate o' Swashbucklin' - SuperBeaver
Chief o' Rum Distillin' - Hitti-Litti
Shiner o' Gold - Ironman2055
Ship's Parrot - Rheinmetall
Cooper - Sparrow55
Chief Marksman- d.highland
Powder Monkey's mate - Xtream Rockstar

Don't worry if your a powder monkey or a cabin boy or something- the list is purely for novelty value. If you want a different position though, just say.

Note to mods: the Pirates forum is practically dead - can you leave this here please?

The story so far…

Crew signups

Thunderbrush had a hard childhood. He was born in London, England, in the year of grace 1662, but when he was only eight years old, he was effectively orphaned. His father, a grog salesman, got heavily into debt with the evil Spanish nobleman Marques de Montaban – and when he couldn’t pay the owed money, the dastardly Spaniard had most of Thunderbrush’s family shipped off to the Caribbean, to pay off the debt as slaves. Swearing revenge, Thunderbrush was able to evade his family’s fate, although he then found himself living on the streets, with no money and no family…

Ten years later, at the age of eighteen, Thunderbrush decided that it was time to make something of his life. He booked a passage to the tropical paradise of the Caribbean, to earn his fortune, and maybe even get back into contact with his lost family.

The voyage across the Atlantic however, was frought with terror and cruelty. The captain drove the ship and the crew to breaking, giving frequent lashings for the slightest offence, and withholding the grog rations for himself. Pushed beyond all decency, Thunderbrush led the crew in a mutiny!

Thunderbrush leads the mutiny

With evil captain was deposed and thrown out to sea with only a row-boat to keep him afloat, Thunderbrush was voted to be the new captain by the mutinous crew. Renaming the ship ‘His Meier’s Ship the Grog Galley’, he set sail for the Caribbean, and a new life as a daring pirate…

Thunderbrush's destiny awaits him...

That's the introduction summed up. I'll get into the game itself next update. :)

He was a treacherous dog, that captain. Glad to be rid o' him. May the new crew of the good ship Grog Galley have a better commander.

I'll be watching out for that, I tells ye ;)

Too bad there are no AAR games which i play. This looks like a lot of fun.

@Heretic Cata: you don't need the game to take part in the AAR. All you need is a cutlass and a healthy supply of Rum! :)

Parte The First - A Letter Of Marque

Thunderbrush and his scurvy crew of mutineers arrived at the English town of Nevis on the 1st of January 1680. Located in the north-eastern corner of the Caribbean, in the Leeward Isles, Nevis was a prosperous place, brimming with wealth and plentiful food. If Thunderbrush hadn't been flat broke, it would have been a perfect first port of call.

The first order of business for the new Captain Thunderbrush was to visit the tavern. Not for the Rum – that would come later – but to recruit extra pirates to supplement the fifty men that had joined him in the mutiny. The tavern was the natural gathering place for such men of low moral fibre, and despite the booming economy, Thunderbrush found twenty-two men willing to join the crew.

The second order of business was to meet the Governor of Nevis. Thunderbrush knew that it was always a good idea for a Pirate to make friends in high places, and the Governors in the Caribbean were always looking to make allies in the underworld; pirates that they could call on to perform certain less than legal maritime activities, when needed.

Indeed, when Thunderbrush met the Governor, he was presented with a Letter of Marque – a document which authorized pirates to attack the enemies of the nation which issued it.

A Letter of Marque - Thunderbrush knew that these were handed out more or less willy-nilly to any peg-legged, eye-patched gold-hunter with a half-afloat ship, an unhealthy problem with authority and a lust for Rum-sodden violence, but nonetheless, getting one was the first step up a ladder which could see him achieve the rank of Duke! The Governor encouraged Thunderbrush to attack the Spanish and the French.

On the 21st of January, with the crew having drunk through the Grog Galley's remaining supply of Rum with alarming speed, Thunderbrush left Nevis and set sail…but where to?

To plunder the ships of the Spanish to the north, near San Juan?

To plunder the ships of the French to the south, near Monserrat?

Or to do something else entirely? :D

Since we are in Nevis, I think we should go after the French, since they have so many ports nearby. Start off there, then once we have plundered some gold and/or ships from them, take on the Spanish.
