In my case I'm just busy at the moment so I don't have the time to spend on the game I had a few weeks earlier.
It could be the season, too. I just checked how many members were logged onto the forums: 38 for all the Civ III forums, 86 for all Civ Fanatics forums. This seems like an unusually small number of members to be logged onto the forums at 10 PM Eastern time. I suspect this is just a busy time of the year for a lot of people, and consequently fewer people are participating in all forums, not just the Demo Game.
