Where have all the Good Games Gone?

Oh I remember when buying games was a hassle budget wise. These days, a decent full time job and a limited interest in many genres of game means I can have whatever I want.

Yay me.

Genres which used to be exciting and novel are now overwrought and unoriginal. Gamers who used to be excited are now jaded. A little of column A, and a little of column B. Depends on the criteria used. (Hint: Requiring shinier graphics every year to get the same enjoyment resembles another hobby).

Also, Sturgeon's Law did not cease being in effect.

Personally, I find certain games breed less enticing communities, and feel that similar games would benefit by attempting to weed out, through game functionality, those types of antagonizing players. If they can deal with the changes (and perhaps develop themselves appropriately), then the measures would not be a strict bar of their participation, only a discouragement. (Example: Skill-point-based rpgs without respecs {the light/dark system of TOR comes to mind for another})

I cannot say at this time that Civilization is one of those games (although I should probably play more ciV just to be sure).

True, and limited Genres help, but honestly, it's not about affordability as much as it is saving for bigger things (want the mortgage paid off at least 8 years early). Don't mean to imply, you're a wastrel, just saying I work full time in a good job as well, just prioritize differently.

Yeah I'm in a sharehouse, renting, with few major expenses. It's quite handy!

I hate this DLC business however. Not so much the pricing, but the fact I like to collect a completed version of a game.

With Skyrim and The Witcher 2 in my computer and Crusader Kings 2 and Magna Mundi coming out, I don't have a shortage of good games.
What I need is another life to actually have time to play them... more than odd hour every other day.

1) Technology has made game developers forget the appeal of simplicity. The more time the developers spend on leet grafix, the less time they spend on actual design.

2) Blizzard was bought out by Vivendi, causing many of its staff to leave; Westwood and Maxis got bought out and liquidated by EA; Brian Reynolds no longer works for Microprose or Firaxis; the Two Guys from Andromeda split up; etc. Games that are worthy of having "Diablo", "Command & Conquer", "Simcity", "Civilization", "Space Quest", etc. in their titles will never be seen again.

3) First-person shooters are being lobotomized for consoles. Duke Nukem Forever should have been a game in which I can carry ten weapons and I heal by picking up medkits, not a Call of Duty game with Duke providing color commentary. I commend Unreal Tournament III for not falling too far into this trap (though the menus were definitely more console-oriented than in previous Unreal games).

Don't get me all fidgety here. I have about a dozen Shepards ready for ME3 and we're still months away.

Oh wait about 10, I have a couple dead Shepards.
Dead Sheps don't import :undecide:

Have you been avoiding the leaked story spoilers as assiduously as I have?
Skyrim is pretty amazing.

I'm psyched for Skyward Sword too.

Basically it seems like more games need the word "Sky" in the title.
Don't forget Bond 23, which got a name several weeks ago (Skyfall) - not a game, but it fits the naming paradigm

Nostalgia goggles have interesting effects, to be sure.

I agree with the DLC. DLC is not long enough to provide an actual story and plot that an expansion pack can provide. It's like bits and pieces of a game that have fallen off the back of a truck that you pick up along side of the road.

I can't agreethere. Some companies are milking it for reallystupid stuff, but there are many excellent DLC's out there some including good plots.

"Lair of the Shadow Broker" of Mass Effect 2 and "Secret Armoury of General Knox" for Borderlands are the first two that come to mind.

Well, if Joker were playable, the controls would probably be really bad. There's a difference between limping to engineering and exploring an entire outpost.

Yes, helps when it was first leaked and everyone talked about it, I was working longer hours.
