I was playing The hive on thinker difficulty level and set native life form to rare and so I felt safe about it. I had nearly finished the game by the year 2490. The two remaining significant factions (Caretakers and pirates) were no match for my numerous bases and weaponry they produced. It was just a matter of time before I researched a few good military techs I needed and build some really invincible units to wipe those guys out.

And then it began. Nearly near all my bases there were about 15-20 mind worms. They were EVERYWHERE! I had good point on morale and had built that wonder which improves psi attack. But their number defeated me. In bases in heart of my territory where I had 3 garrisons in a city (Too much for such bases) suddenly appeared about 20 worms! Nothing could protect me from them. I hurriedly began building some worms to defend myself. But it was useless.

I still have the savegame. I can still continue the game and may even be able to win it by total destruction of a few remaining bases of the others. But it is not anymore joyful for me. Every turn I must be watching one of my bases razed to ground by those stupid worms!

Where I had done something wrong? and how can I prevent such thing from happening. Only once I used the planetary council to raise sea levels because I felt it was easier to fight on ground. I could never imagine 333 meters of sea level increase would lead to such drastic situation.

Again, What should I do to avoid this situation and is there a way to get out of it?

If you're creating too much pollution, then Planet strikes back by converting some of your terraformed squares into fungus and sending whole bunches of mindworms at your cities.

The best way to get out of this mess is to build pollution control stuff like the Pholus Mutagen.

Luckily I had a saved game about 20 years earlier where planet was still green :D
I played it and succefully finished the game. Destroyed the last city of the pirates with a planet buster!

defending againts mind worm .
1 perimeter defence for base
2 some trance sentinel with hight moral
3 sensor array around the base, at least 2 (in case ome get destroyed)
4 artillery (can make up to 90% damge )
most important try to be on the attack postion

if you have good moral (command nexus+cyborg factory)and +2 to
planet or more just build a scout every turn and kill one mind worm
sometime you may even capture them .

I always build a lot of crawler when the tecnology is available and poluting the planet until I got many fungus bloom and can have 30 mineral per base w/o polution.
the problem came later in game when bulding the bulkmater transmiter
then I have to stop the use of crawler to mineral. I got polution in almost every base .

anyway the mind worm just kill all the unit they can ,when no unit left the eat one citizen and go

you can also block the path to your base with airplane or graviship
they can't attack air unit (exception locust of chirrron)

I think the biggest number i found was 8 mindworm in one sQuare
one bobmbardwment and one speeder finish them in one turn

BTW evry game I lost some former and crawler half of them to mind worm

Perimeter Defenses do nothing against Mind Worms. The movie for The Citizen's Defense Force tells you as much.

Planet will rise against you if you overpollute. Also, when The Voice of Planet is completed, fungus grows considerably across Planet and large number of Mind Worms appear near polluting cities.

As for controlling Mineral pollution - I've seen a city produce 110 minerals per turn without polluting. +4 Planet (Gaians using Green and controlling the Manifold Nexus) with a Centauri Preserve, Temple of Planet and The Pholus Mutagen. It is possible to build highly productive empires without polluting.

the 110 mineral is very interesting .I try to think how you make so much mineral in one base , telll me how! what year ? what level of tecnology
I can think about many fungus square with 3 mineral and 3 nutriant per square
and 2 project for mineral and one facility for mineral and of course some crawler.

in my current game playing the peacekeeper on thinker level. un headquarter is my best base , were producing 34 mineral with crawler (polution too)
size 14 .
year 2360 just finish to conquer some secret project from the univercity and make a truce with them morgan have surender after losing
4 city one of them twice . I only built 2 secret project (rush with crawler) :
the human genome project and the universal translator.
I got a lot of tecnology from diplmacy, prob, data pod, alien artifact and spoil of war. finaly won the race on the tecnology and got to Quantom power( mostly with alien artifact.
have 3 artifact on the way to the universal translator or conquered univercity base .
thinking how to end my pact with gaian to get the cyborg factory.
maybe after making the nano factory and finishing all punishement sphere in progress

That maybe caused not by pollution but by planetbusting. Each hit cause retribution. if you launchen even one then you'll be attacked for sure.
