New patch, new game. I think the lake tobacco is a no-brainer; you are within 2 of the other tobaccos, and can put a second city next to the marble later. You also get a 2 gpt bonus at the start, and have two forests to work. The tobacco plantation +3 gold isn't that great. And as Askia, you don't lose a turn.

On the other hand, the lake marble city might be awful, by settling in place you have three lux in the second ring. Up the lake will be a good 2nd city (probably). On the other hand, you lose the forest, and the first ring is pretty awful.

What do you all think?

I'd settle on the hill beside the tobacco immediately down right from the current settler location. Bonus production on the city for the hill, marble for wonders in your capital, fairly defensible, and decent access to two tobaccos.

The Marble is three tiles away, so it will be a while before you can get it. The bonus only applies to pre-industrial wonders, so I'm not sure how much use the bonus would get.

You're swapping 3f1p2g for 2f2p, is that a good deal?

Is defense that important as Songhai? You're probably going authority

If dead set on going after some early wonder I'd go on the left hill. You have no res at first, but your first expansion bring in either one (or both if you find nomads). Having the tobacco immediately isn't that big of a deal and you'll get more production + more and the bonus of the marble way sooner that way. You can still focus on the 2f of the forest with your first pop.
Later on with a second city you can possibly settle downriver if the resources are nice and you'll get it all without overlapping too much.
Plus it'll let you do a triple farm on the river if no resource pop-up. You'll have a slower pop growth though.
Otherwise rsc2a's advice seems pretty solid to me and will let you buy stuff a bit earlier.
In general I tend to favor production so I am biased.

Since I imagine you're going full on bloody conquest, I'd recommend settling on Tobacco by the river to the northeast. That way you get quicker access to gold and you move away from the mountains which could limit the benefit of your capital.

I like the tobacco settle is right, although I would have wanted to move my scout over to the marble to see what the land around it is like. Getting +1 production early is pretty big and there might be enough good titles to make treking over there worth it

City 1 should go SWest to hill on river (MY priority), marble and tobacco in the 2nd ring, and City 2 goes on the hill 4 tiles NEst of City 1; BOTH spots are on the river .
