Here is the part of the map in question:

I am trying to get the stone. But there is a nice city spot on the north west corner of the map that I need to consider, and squeezing other cities in as well. And there is marsh/mangrove everywhere. The forest hill west of the rice and the hill right below it are also marsh.

My next city is going near the obsidian. You cant see it from the screenshot, but placing it on the hill north east of the obsidian will give me 2 indigos, lobster and obsidian in the initial city radius.

My decision:

2 west from the rice. It will take a while with realistic culture to get the stone, and I might crowd myself out of a city to the west, but this spot has lots of hills and a ton of river tiles. Going to be a powerhouse city I bet. but it wasnt immediately obvious to me.

That's why I don't spend much time worrying about the resources when it gives me poor city placement to do so. My pick would've been to ignore the stone for this one and plant a city one space west of the cotton. The stone would come eventually as I worked cities around in the most optimal placement for the sake of each city.

I think its fascinating how if you ask 10 different people where they would place the cities you would get 10 different answers

Ive only recently started trying to space them tighter, I tend to hate overlap tiles. but with the 3 tile radius it takes a while before you can use them all, and its not like specialist buildings are in short supply.

As for the resources, I agree a lot of the time they are inconsequential in city placement. However stone means +1 :hammers: and +3 :gold: due to stone houses, and also many early wonders either require stone or are sped up with stone. Inuksuk is (imo) a decent wonder to build in a minor city because it is permanent (doesnt obsolete) and effects the entire continent. Ill build Moai Statues in a city with 4+ water tiles I know Ill be working in the reasonable future, and thats another permanent one

Here is what things look like after a few cities

Next city is going to the west of that little inlet.

Note that the city in question picked up a pigs and 3 silvers. Not bad for a financial leader, although im not sure how good commerce is in the long run.

Personally, I would have founde Tiwanaku 1S and 2W (on the mangroves at the end of the river); having a city on a coastal tile allows you to build buildings like ports and harbors that increase A LOT your trade routes income (this is why most of my cities are on a coastal tile). In addition, you would have more space between the cities, so with the 3rd radius you don't overlap too much (but since you're building the first cities, having them tight connected could get you a bonus because you have less "distancce from the capital" manteinance)

Problem is, cant build on a mangrove or swamp for a LONG time. And if I went all coastal i would be ignoring a lot of good land in the center there that wouldn't be available until cities got the required culture for the third ring. And of course that stone is useful early.

Although i do have another source of stone down here

Gonna take me a bit longer to get down there, especially since I might head east to take out Doc Holiday first.

Personally I found my cities so they touch a river and coast as much as possible due to the large amount of extra river and sea buildings you can build. Any space between can either be good when my city grows or to hunt animals in if it has no claimed borders.

Same here, i try to place as my cities smack dab in the rivers MOST connecting spot, that way i reap the benefits from all area around from the rivers vast treasures. Plus that is a better place for crops and good "black dirt" from the moisture.
