Which 8 civs?

After more reading about, I am thinking a the moment that the new civs will probably be

1. the Spanish
2. the Arabs
3. the Mongols

+4. the Vikings or Scandinavians
5. the Celts
6. the Carthaginians/ or the Hebrews instead
7. the Inca
8. either Korea (for commercial reasons rather than achievement) or Indonesia

Personally, though, my euro-centrism makes me desire that we have:

1. the Spanish - created almost all Latin America, most powerful state in the world for a good few centuries
2. the Arabs - created Islam and territories extending from Spain too Indo-China, helped preserve Greek and Indian knowledge even if they didn't make many original contributions themselves
3. the Celts - invented ring-mail and had territories extending from Spain and Ireland to Asia Minor
4. the Scots - gave us, in many ways, television, telephone, penicillin, social sciences, geology, Marxism (Scottish enlightenment historiography), and was the most important centre of the European Enlightenment
5. the Scandinavians - we all know what the Vikings did, plus there is Gustavus Adolphus, Uppsala, Danish astronomy, Swedish film, etc
6. the Turks - cool addition, would like to play them against the Germans, and TAKE VIENNA
7. the Aborigines - if civ3 is about changing history, this is the ultimate civ to do this. A large historico-anthropological group perhaps closer to any other large group to "man, as he really is"
8. another balance civ, like the Indonesians Ethiopians or Inca

Mango thrower?! They dont even have mangos in Ethiopia!

I hope they include a nother black African civ, but won't be surprised if they don't. If they do, the strong candidates are:
Ethiopia - known by the Greeks as "the teachers of the Egyptians", the Ethiopians were the first people to mint coins with crosses on them and they built massive hill-top and rock-cut subterranean cathedrals, they held off Islam and then European colonization and controlled their own destiny all the way. THey claim ownership of the Ark of the Covenant and Hailie Selassie, thier last emporer, is worshipped as a God in far off Jamaica.

Swahili - already trading with hellenistic Egypt in the 3rd century, the people of the East African coast had close contact with India and Arab peninsula, but traded with far off China as well (Chinese records show they traded porcelain for giraffes). The swahili language which emerged from bantu and arab with portuguese and english loan words is spoken as a lingua franca from Congo to Madagascar to Somalia, and historical chronicles and love poetry were written in the past in it along the east african coast.

Mali, Songhay, Gao - the west african savanna kindgoms that brought us Timbuktu, strong libraries, strong universities, horse warriors, desert traders, and shipped most of the gold to midevil europe, had so much gold their leader's pilgramage to mecca actually lowered the value of gold in midevil Cairo.

As for other under-represented parts of the world, the Inca definitely stand atop South AMerican civs, including the SPanish would be a nod to the vast part of the new world they settled, and the Polynesians would fill in a need for better maritime civs (suggested UU- replace scout with a one passenger boat that moves two and ignores the deep sea taboo).

As for old faves, I see the Mongols and Vikings coming back.

Arabs would be nice but I don't think it will happen in today's climate of Arabophobia. I predict the Turks will represent the Muslim world in the XP, and those Janissaries will represent them well indeed...
