Which Civ to invade?

Warlord level. 1800's. Standard map. 2 continents.

I have successfully defeated the 3 other Civ's on my continent and I kept most of their cities. I have Grenadiers/Cannons and should be able to upgrade to Infantry in less than 10 turns.

The other continent has 3 Civs in this strength order. 1) Cyrus (located at the southern end). 2) Towanga (located in the center). 3) Ceasar (located at the north end). Missionary recon shows all have a few Musketmen but mainly lesser units.

Question: Which Civ to invade? To me, Towanga is the last choice as he is on the middle of the Continent. Ceasar would be the easiest as he occupies the least land mass but Cyrus is my only real long term challenge. I suppose I could play out for a Space victory, but at this point, I want the action as I could loose by some other method other than being conquered or Space. I have the units and a slight tech lead at least for military units.

Used to play a lot of Civ 3 a few years ago. Daughter recently gave me Civ 4 and just getting back into it. Just realizing how much I love this game. Glad my daughter gave it to me.

I agree with avoiding the middle at this point. How are the relationship between the three? You could hit the least popular (if there is one) without having to worry about fighting all three before you get a foothold on the continent. If all three like each other, I'd hit Cyrus as he is on end of the continent and has more to take without putting you in the middle.

If you aren't sure you could hold against Cyrus if you take something, you could try declaring war and waiting until he's willing to talk before you grab a couple of cites. Could just be a couple of worthless little ones. Make peace and then start massing units in your captured cities. When you have enough for a war of conquest, declare war again and finish him off.

I reccommend taking out Cyrus, taking out the big threat surely makes more sense, shame you can't vassalise any of them.

I do suggest you bring lots of units on your first landing on continent two though, cuse whenever i play a continents i tend to bring to much seige in the original landing, and not enough foot soldiers. Although if your seige is cannons you mgiht not want to worry if their strongest unit is Musketman.

If you were in a devious mood you could alwasy bribe someone into attacking someone else, then attacking the winner after the end of the war while they're unprepared and vunerable.

Definitely Cyrus. If he is your only long-term challenger to winning this game, take him down.... and soon. Use diplomacy if need be to coerce the others to your way of thinking - even if you have to change to Tokugawa or Caesar's religion (if not the same as Cyrus). Blackmail or bribe the other civ's if you have to, to stay either on your side or at the very least, out of the war.

Why not post some screenshots or the save for more advice? I'm not an expert by far (well, I have recently returned to cIV) but am always interested in others' games.

Next, if you decide to hit Cyrus (or anyone for that matter), you'll need to decide what city you are taking first and where you are landing your troops.

Good luck

Another option is to pay Cyrus to attack Caesar. This depends on him having open borders with Tokugawa. Give Cyrus some time to move his troops north and then attack him (Cyrus). This tactic puts him off guard while you move your ships in to attack. If you do it the other way around, paying Caesar to attack Cyrus, he might just declare war on you and put you into the position of moving ships through a war zone. You will get a -1 penalty from Caesar for getting Cyrus to declare war, but that will be offset by the pluses you get from the mutual struggle. Any troops Cyrus moves north will stay north while the war with Caesar is going on and the AI tends to move everything but it's city garrisons to fight. New construction will stay home to fight you, but you would face that issue in either case.

If Cyrus doesn't have an open borders agreement with Tokugawa, then he might launch a naval attack against him. It might be possible to sink troop laden galleons heading north and put the units out of action permanently. This is the whole purpose of this strategy is to get Cyrus to move his army away from your target, which is him. The hard part will be to actually get him to declare war on Caesar. Cyrus is more passive than Caesar and may not bite. Caesar, on the other hand, will attack pretty much anyone if you throw some coins at him. If you have no choice, get Caesar to declare war on Cyrus. This works, but IMO it's not the most favorable scenario.

For your part, you only declare war when your units are in position and ready to go. Timing is everything with this sort of naval invasion.
