Which is harder to win, Civ1 or Civ 3? Which takes longer to win?

I'm trying to figure this out, but I have won so few games that I thought I would ask you all.

Civ3, definitely. Civ1 allowed you to get away with outrageous things, like my favorite "park outside the capital with a transport full of tanks and then nuke it, take it and split the country" strategy.

Hmm.. what is this I keep hearing about splitting the country? I wonder if that is also something which is not in the SNES version? I have attacked apitol cities many times, and I've never seen a civ split. (Although I have seen cities deciding to join a different empire.. which is rare, but never a splitting civ.)

When you capture the capital city of a civ, there is a chance that a civil war will break out in that civ and it will split in two.

Conditions...

I beleive the civ needs to have a certain number of cities for this to happen.

There has to be an available "color" for the new civ. If you play with 7 civs on your planet, then a civil war cannot occur until one of those civs is eliminated. Also, sometimes a new civ will start when one is eliminated. For example, the Romans might come into existance if the Russians are eliminated. I beleive this is dependant on the number of unoccupied tiles on the map and game year.

What happens is a portion of the civs cities split and form a new civ. So, if you conquer Paris, then the Indians may spring up.

I am not sure about Civ1, but in Civ2, the size of Civ does not play a role. Only the power ranking (number of advisors seen behind the ruler in the Diplomacy window in Civ1). Not sure if they changed it, but there already was a power ranking in Civ1. But of course, the size is the foremost factor for the power ranking. :yeah:

And Civ3 is definitely MUCH harder on the higher levels, it really is a challenge, while in Civ1, it became a race to launch the spaceship BC on Emperor. Which is possible, even without using the simple cheats (infinite settler work, etc).
:D

Civ3. I've won it like, twice. :ack:

Well, I attempted to try it, and considering I haven't done too well the last 2 times I tried King mode, this time I would have conquered the world after like 20 turns if it wasn't for restarting ivs. =P I don't even know how many times I've killed a civilisation..

Let's see.. first was..

Greece,
India,
China (restarted)
France (restarted)
Japan

Then because I was getting bored, I decided I'd stop wiping out other civs and let them live just for a challenge, but I still "monitor" their growth and have had to take a city from America (restarted) and also when I arrived in the Americas I destroyed all known Aztec (restarted) cities but there was one I missed. =P (That was before I started being nice. =P) And Babylon (restarted) has been very nice to me so far, except for the fact hat I discovered their existance when I was about to build a city like 1 tile away. =P
