Which games did which things the best?

I'm curious about who many of Civ V's current players are using it for Vox Populi as opposed to "vanilla" Civ V. As far as I know, VP isn't available through Steam, so there is a bit of a threshold to playing it.
 
My only experience is with Civ4 and beyond, so grains of salt and all that.

Civ4: Best AI, and probably the most narratively immersive diplo game as a result. I vastly prefer 1upt to Stacks-o-Doom, but the AI was certainly better at handling the DoomStacks (understandably.) Religion felt more like an interesting facet of alliances than a way to anger your neighbors.

Civ5: Good for Tall Empires, but honestly way too good for Tall Empires. This is the big thing I recall in an entry that was definitely revolutionary in a lot of ways, but now feels mainly transitional between 4 and 6. (Introducing 1upt, unique abilities, city states, but not to the full extent that 6 would flesh those out, and still using 1-tile-cities.)

BE: I had trouble getting into this one, but I love the options your Civ gets up front when setting off. This would be a great thing for Civ as a franchise to try again in other ways.

Civ6: Really tying the game to the terrain, which I adore. As someone has said at some point, the AI isn't great. I sympathize with this as there seems to be just so much for the AI to deal with in this game that I don't know what would even go into making it better, but hopefully there will be some good ideas, and hopefully this will be a priority, in building Civ7's engine.

Civ6 also shines with the different personalities, both the unique feel of different Civs (to the point where Babylon, which truly does play like no other Civ, still feels like a disappointment because it lacks the flavor that most other Civs have.) It looks gorgeous and the official game modes allow for a lot of customizability (which is a nice touch if the mod support isn't gonna be there.)
