Which is the best civ to play with?!?

but building those improvements is no problem if your corruption is low(pick an industrious civ). With the strategic positioning of the palace & forbidden palace you can lower your corruption & increase your production.

I must admit that this doesn't work when you're playing a huge map.

I think the best things to pick are Industrious & Scientific

yes industrious, scientific is great, with the best UU. There you go. Persia all the way. When you're industrious and scientific, you can usually take your choice of the wonders :D. And with the immortals you can be king of the world!

Now, i just picked out that from what you said, cos i don't much understand the rest :D. I think the rate of corruption is different on a huge map too. but yeah, i don't understand what you're talking about.

bobgote

Portuguese was saying that commercial civs are maybe the best.
I just responded that those specific benefits are kind of lost when you build Smith's Trading Company

But they're not. The commercial advantages are in the production time of the commercial improvs. The smith trading company advantage is that you pay no maintenance. If anything, they complement each other.

I used to always play romans but you gotta play random sometimes, it keeps things "fresh"

America is great too because of the expansionist trait!

You will appreciate religious on emperor or deity. The free tech means nothing. No amount of luxuries will keep all of the people happy, unless you are very lucky or you conquer a lot. And conquering luxuries on deity is very difficult. The temple for religious civs gives 2 culture per turn, 1 happiness, and costs only 30 shields. Also, happiness is important in your score. You need all the help you can get, but you don't need to be that worried about the tech tree.

I don't see how people like scientific much now. I guess it's just the counter culture. :)

Libraries come a little after temples, so you lose a little of the early culture advantage, and the potential for the 1000 year culture doubling bonus.

I won an emperor game with german ( scientific and militaristic) ag 3 a.i. and beleive me i sold my free tech for lots of gold per turn, i bought most of the tech, but i did some reaserch on important one so yes even on high difficulty it is good to have a strong reasearch . Temple give only 1 contented not happy poeple buy luxuries if needed and later on conquere them.

I admit that scientific is better with the recent patch. Researching stuff is more important than before, but I think the patch weakens monarchy too much because you need to be in a republic to get any decent research done. I can't get luxuries very easily if they are going to cost me over 1000 gold. That's about 50 gold per turn. You would be better off increasing your luxury bar...

Try to buy some techs from the AI after you take a few reputation hits. You will see what I mean. They are worse when it comes to tech whoring, and you have to research more now. Soren adjusted their tech rate so deity won't end by space race in 1430, but it's kind of unbalanced because selling tech brings in more but buying it is a lot more difficult.

Well, I could get a tech at around every 8 turns in monarchy, but that isn't fast enough considering how the AI trades their techs. I prefer republic for research.

I'll have to go republican too see that incredible science working...

Be careful, you will pay 1 gold per units so its good to keep only minimum amount of soldier if you want the full benefits of a republic, you dont need military police in your city so keep a good little size army ready at a hot spot and you are ok, most of the time i disband all non veteran units as soon as i am a republic. And then the a.i. see you weak and can declare war but its not a problem if you are ready, and you can stay a republic while in war without war weariness( a.i. declare war not you).

You should focus more on offensive units in a republic. You want the war to be over quickly, and with you on top. You don't need military police at all. And the AI seems to value their techs as much as their cities in surrenderings now. You aren't always capable of killing off a tough AI, like in the infantry era.

I prefer the Babylonians: first their special units are available very soon and help you to have a bit more surface at the beginning... The spec unit is also good in defense (2), so they can replace spearmen until you discover musketeers.
Secondly, the association religious-scientific allows you to build cathedrals very quickly (you discover monotheism directly after the ancient age, and the cathedral cost is reduced)
And finally, the fact that are you can change the government in one turn make you win 4-8 turns per game.

I have only played with the Persians, Japanese, and Germans (all scientific)... I play on regent to keep tech advancements rather real... I must say that scientific seems weak to me. I am always behind in tech and therefore forced to buy everything, why don't I just play commercial or industrious? I don't know, but I still like the Germans the best mainly for their UU. The Persians and Japanese UU came to early in the game for it to be any fun. With those two civs I usually ended up dominating everyone in the middle ages. Then I switched to the Germans and the game became much more difficult to control mainly because my armies weren't so kick arse early on. Also, by the time I get Panzers, I have taken over my continent and sometimes others, thus transporting them becomes a pain since I need to cross water, a new dilemma that gives a lower functional purpose to the unit so late.

Basically, to the question of which is the best civ to play with; the one you like the most.
