I use random, now, but personally, I despise the continent and archipelago games, because the only thing that matters is how good your continent is once expansion is done.
Archipelago only. It gives you all - continental warfare, as well as maritim challenges.
The only form of landmass, on which you really can make good use of your units.
But with minimum land mass, you get largeish, 5 or 6 isolated islands, good for 10 - 20 cities (even more, if two islands happen to melt together). Just loving it!
Continents and Archipelagos - large Archipelagos with little water are actually close to continents and still offer lots of strategic options.
I do not like Pangea - it takes out the whole naval element, looks rather dull and well... it is not to my taste. I personally say, it is for beginners who want to betray themselves of half the fun.
One option is really missing: There are lots of people who play on "real world" worldmaps or historical ones, like those in the conquests... -> custom maps perhaps. But I think it is still interesting to see which of the 3 standard options is preferred!
