Guys,

Competely new to the civ 3 community...yeah, yeah I know, where have I been ???

I have downloaded the patches I needed, would like some advise on which are the best mod updates I should be downloading to give me the best game possible......There seem to be so many out there, so not sure which one i should be using...I know it comes down to personal preference....but any suggestions will help.

Seen a few scottish things too.....is there a mod that involves the scottish units ???

Thanks for your help !!!

Thanks,

Davie G

Yes, it does come down to personal preferences. Some mods make drastic changes to the normal civ3 game, while others just change a few minor things like unit values, but keeps the rest of the rules the same.

There is a mod pack that has a Scottish civ:

I like the DyP (Double your Pleasure) mod. But it is a huge change from the normal civ3 game, that it probably should be considered a whole different game. There are tons of new units, buildings, techs, resources and wonders. There are about 50 Great wonders to build. And in the next version there is gonna be even more of them, and supposedly 44 techs for each era! You have different worker and settler units that have different movement capabilities, and you can't irrigate or mine until the middle ages, and you can't even build roads until you have the 'wheel' tech. So, as you can see some make drastic changes that you would need to learn totally different strategies.

I would read about them carefully to see what changes they make and what changes are aimed at what you are looking for/prefer.

I would make a copy of your entire Civ3 folder before downloading any mods. Because some mods like DyP has it's own resources and units, they may over-write your existing unit/resource files in that if you ever want to go back to normal civ3 rules, you would have to re-install the whole game. But if you had a copy of that folder you can just do a simple swapping of folders and everything will be back to normal.

I do not recommend downloading mods that will significantly alter the gameplay like DYP, until you have fully enjoyed the original Civ3.

However, you could download many of the nice graphics mod, like Snoopy's Terrain Graphics and the different leaderheads once you get sick of the original ones.

My signature has a link to some good graphics modpacks that don't change the game rules. You may want to check them out.

When I download Snoopy's modpack off your link it only gives me a couple of the files, I'm assuming because the link leads to an update, which doesnt have all the files. Where do I get the original?

The DyP mod is incredible, there are 49 or so more advances more units and improvements. It is very fun and challenging to play. I have had rough games on the warlord level than on Prince or higher on the standard. The mod has a great support team and are constantly updating and improving it.

I agree with S1m0ne, though, that you should play the standard to get a good feel for the game before taking on the mod. The civs in that mod can get fairly blood thirsty, but makes for a good diplomatic game as well.

Then get DyP!:)

It's in the completed modpacks forum.

I would follow the link to the Double Your Pleasure website and download the newest readme file. Because the thread at CFC is over 100 pages long (over 2000 responses), so alot of the first 80 pages or so don't apply to the newest version of the DyP mod.

Thanks a lot Bamspeedy, now i can finally play a game that doesn't end the same way (cavalry=every one gone)
