I like the French, personally. Plundering Spanish ships is really lucrative. And the French governors' daughters are most attractive.

I always pick the British. They're usually in a fun position ( a few cities, but not too many, but not too few, either, and spread throughout the map), and you get a Brigantine, which fits my style better than a sloop or galleon.
And, of course, because they have the best city music! Kudos if you can name it.

I go Dutch more often than not - more ships and cities to attack, and Curacao is a nice port for attacking the Spanish Main.

Mostly I go for the Dutch, I seem to get better prices for spices and other goods in Dutch cities.

Isn't going after the Baron and Count problematic ? Whenever I tried playing as a Spaniard, it seemed they were Spanish also, and attacking their ships to recover family and fiancee made me unpopular.
The daughters are indeed beautiful, and that must be challenging .
In my experience when I took out Montalban, the Governer didn't think of it, and when I take out Baron Raymondo I get a rap on the knuckles but no "real" consequences. I don't know if at lower ranks it takes less to get bombarded, but playing as Spanish Duke, which I always get at 18 means I would have to kill 4 or 5 Baron Raymondo's to get shot at lol.

You certainly can. Especially if you don't interfere with the shipping to and from the daughter's home port .
But it makes it harder. The Spanish have the most treasure, ports ,shipping, and most of their ships are slower. The more you aggrevate them, the more pirate hunters they send, the more they shoot at you when you pass their ports & not let you in , the quicker the gov is to dismiss you without a reward, or letting you speak with his daughter. That makes it impossible to get promotions and dances .That makes buying food expensive or impossible, etc.
In my current game, the city with my wife was conquered by the Spanish. Now every time I want to see her, I have to attack the city first. But I can't install another governor, even if I have 200 men against a city garrison of 20 soldiers.
Conclusion: Whatever you choose as starting team, don't marry a spanish daughter, if you plan to plunder them!
