How do you know which technology to choose next?
Do you focus on a unit / wonder / building / Culture?...
...And follow that line in the tree?

HELP.

Depends on your goal. How do you want to play?

Early conquest, space-ship, diplomatic?

Welcome to CFC TheBadger!

I generally like to head down the military domination route, I don't get the whole winning through diplomatic means.

Build up the armies.

How do you do it??

When you're faced with a huge list of technologies, which one are you going to choose and why?

Then you want to go for the govt tech Monarchy (warmongerer's choice) and the unit techs Horseback Riding and Iron Working.

At what point do you go back and attain the techs that you missed by heading for unit techs?

I can only speak for myself:

Ancient Age: Republic slingshot - Alphabet-Writing-Code of Laws-Philosophy-Republic (for free).

Middle Ages: Feudalism-Monotheism-Chivalry, then straight through the Education block towards the next age.

Industrial Age: Steam Power-Industrialization and the techs that lead to Replaceable Parts. After that Scientific Method to get two free techs from Theory of Evolution.

Modern Age: Fission. More arbitrary after that.

It depends

At the start of the game, the main focus is to get a monopoly on a tech higher up in the tree, so that you can trade that monopoly tech for multiple tech with the AI. (and all of their gold and other stuff as well) Of course, I try to combine this goal with the goal of getting something I can really use.

Normally this means I go straight for republic, then mathematics, and currency, or literacy. While trading for the other tech.
I may deviate to getting pottery (for a granary) first, depending on the starting location.
And I may self research an unit tech first, If I'm going to have a very early war.

In the middle ages, I usually go for the knight unit, and then straight to cavalry. Then the seafaring tech. (but if I can control my continent before cav, I will go for the seafaring tech first)

In the industrial age, the first goal is steam(rails), then replaceable parts (infantry and artillery) then scientific method for Theory of evolution wonder (that I have a pre-build ready for) and use the 2 free tech to get electricity for hover dam (that I also have a pre-build ready for)

I have little experience with the modern age.

Then you want to go for the govt tech Monarchy (warmongerer's choice)

I disagree, monarchy is only the choice for the always war variant. If you are not playing that variant, but are simply a big warmongerer, then republic is still usually better.

Cheers Guys.

Do you have to aquire a certain amount of technologies before you move on to the next age?

Take a look at your science advisor screen (F6) for the ancient age. Look at 'The Republic' - that is an optional tech. Notice the difference? That circle on top? All techs without the circle are mandatory. Complete them and move on to the next age. Do remember that you can trade with other civs to get techs from them.

@MAS: yeah, that's what I meant and I agree with you. I play nothing but Republic.

I typically go for the Republic slingshot early on, trading for other AA techs along the way. Two techs that I always try to trade for early on are Iron Working and The Wheel. That'll tell me where iron and horses are and help me plan my city placement, as well as telling me what will be available for any early wars. Getting resources to appear on the map is another consideration in this decision.

After the slingshot, I begin taking down any other non-optional techs to advance to the next age. Trading along the way is a big part of the tech progression and you can usually trade for most of the tech that you'll need to get out of the AA, taking the other civs' gold in the process. Also be mindful that "pointy stick research" is another option.

Beat your opponent really good and you can demand almost everything from him in a peace treaty.

the key to pointy stick research is to A) Not destroy your opponent and B) be able to scare him. I once had carthage down to near the end and took his last city except for one on an island... and he would give me nothing. Until I landed a force next to his one city - then he gave it up ;)

You can often use pointy stick research to catch up if you are behind - raze a city or two and the AI will usually say "ouch!"

also consider the map type. for island/archepeligo(?) worlds with little landmass ill go after map making asap for galley (exploring and transport) and harbors for food bonus.

What happened when he gave his last city up, was he eliminated from the game. What happened to me once was that france demendad 3 workers for peace after a massive war. I destroyed like 20 cities of theres and they only had two left so i didn't accept. Then i tested what they would give me and i clicked on there 2 cities and the advisor said 'this deal will probably be acceptable'. But I didn't propose the deal because I thought there was somthing weird about it. I probably should have :(. But that didn't matter I finished those two cities off about ten turns later. They were on little island a long way away . I hate it when AI's build cities on 3 square islands .

Republic as soon as possible. Then research all remaining required techs

If I can build knights I go for Chivalry. If not then straight to Military Tradition

Replaceable Parts and then Tanks

Fission first so I can build UN. After that I research all SS component techs

To propose a deal with another civ do I need an embassy in their city. or do I need to wait until I am asked to leave thier territory then propose a deal?

I've looked on the adivisor screens but can not see where to talk to the other civs.

I'm sure it's just something simple, so be kind.

You do not need an embassy to make deals.

Hit the F4 key (that's the foreign advisor screen) to bring up the leaderheads. Click the leaderhead you want to make a deal with.

This can also be done on the trade screen (F2), but use F4 for now.
