Who else has already bought a new PC in anticipation of Civ V?

My current PC is over a year old and crushes any and all games I play, including a variety of games that are way more demanding than any game in the Civ family will ever be.

I'd like to build a new PC just because I like to build PCs and have up-to-date tech, but it's definitely not necessary for Civ.

The civ series will never be so graphically demanding that it's worth going nuts with a new PC or video card JUST for civ.

Yes but alot of us are buying these new rigs for more then just civ. I am sure my current machine can play civ 5. but there are a few of the newer titles that cause some slowdown on its aging hardware. Like large battles in Dragon Age. I can't finish the game cause I get annoyed with the slide show. Be glad when the new pc arrives and I can finally see the end of that game for instance.

Hardly the case any pc built with the core I5 or I7's is gonna not be obsolete by the time Civ 5 comes out. Use your brain before you type.

i7 extreme seems pretty sweet, but yes my statement was a bit of a hyperbole, would it be fair to say a computer with equivalent specs would be cheaper?

The first thing I thought about when I heard Civ5 was coming out, was ..... I need a new PC

I can't even finish a game of Civ4 on my PC without it crashing lategame (mostly the graphics card).

So, I put 100 bucks into my savings account, and will do that every month till Civ5 is released...by Sept I'll have 700 bucks....

Not sure what I can get for that, or how much I'll have to "top it off" ...

I figure any CPU these days is good enough, I'm thinking its the graphics card that will make the difference.........am I wrong

I started this thread after I I got a sweet Asus for $730, which with tax came out to about $780. The thing is, the integrated graphics on mine are actually good enough to run any game out there that I can find. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't see improvement if I got a video card, but I'm hardly held back by not having one either. Eventually I'll have to get a graphics card to keep up with the latest and greatest graphic processing, which would probably also require a power source upgrade, but I'm more of a strategy player than a graphical player so running the high end graphics is something that doesn't concern me until I can't run a game that I really want to get...like Civ V.

I hardly can imagine that V is going to be more graphic intensive than the newest total war games, and I (surprisingly) seem to run those fine with my integrated graphics.

The bottom line, I'd say you can get a more than acceptable system for just a hair more than the $700 you'll already have.

Really not as much as you would think. It depends on resolution alot also. If you are playing at 1280x1024 you can run almost any game at nice resolutions on something as old as an 8800 gts. But if you start cranking up to monitors that are running at 1900x1200 resolution you will likely need a newer video card then the example I provided. Of course mileage will vary depending on other factors, but still its a decent comparison I guess.

You can get a decent computer for $500 if you buy it refurbished. It is just like new except much cheaper.
