Who else likes the Strategic View?

Yup, makes the game way more playable on my struggling old laptop. In normal view even with graphics all the way down it grinds. In strategic view it trundles along quite well.
On my desktop I'm in normal mode usually, the world is just too pretty to ignore.

The filters in strategic view are invaluable. So very very useful for hunting down the oil or aluminium when it doesn't pop near one of my cities.

Resurrecting an old thread here, I guess, but I'm new to Civ5 and have to say I'm very grateful for the so-called "strategic view" map.

I bought Civ5 for a new "netbook" computer, thinking that a TBS game ought to work just fine on it. It does, but all the 3-D animated graphics are irrelevant to me, and they probably slow the game down a bit. After playing in both modes, I've gotten into the habit of playing only in "strategic view."

I suppose I'm an old fogie, but I don't get the need for all this eye candy in a TBS game. The option to set the graphics back twenty years is perfect for me.

I've played almost all of my 700 hours on strategic, and not for performance issues. I just love the 90's feeling of it, and it allows me to make less mistakes as -for me- it is far more clear.

Same here, I play on Strategic View not only because of improved performance, but because I actually prefer those graphics.

It's a bit funny, actually, after a large session playing on Strategic View, when I press Esc to open the menu, the game changes back to the 3D view - and only then I "remember" that I was playing in 2D, and that there was a 3D view option. Then I scroll around in this 3d view for a while to check out the world, and switch back to the Strategic View afterwards.

Yeah i do the same. I have a craptop Toshiba satellite with an amd sempron 2.1 GHz with 2 gigs of ram and a radeon 3100 card, and I was disappointed at how terrible my game ran until i started playing in strategic view. I now like it better, and even on my really nice desktop at home, I find myself playing in strategic mode and then just checking in with the 3d.

I wonder, if there was a way to mod the game so that there was only strategic mode. Would that improve game speed?

takes a few games to get used to it

i always use it now, you dont get the unit graphic stack problems that sometimes prevent you selecting a unit.

its quicker to respond - mp bonus

its simpler, play with yeild icons on if improvement icons are not clear to you
