Who else likes the Strategic View?

I'm worried that I'll like the strategic view too much, and end up playing most of the game on it. Which is a shame because I have a really high-end computer and want to see that lush, organic landscape in all its beauty.

The O-word again :\
But yeah, the strategic view looks neat. In games like galciv2 & supcom I usually end up playing with it 90% of the time. I guess it's eventually going to be the same with civ5, at least after a few games in full 3D mode.

I never used strategic view in Civ4. Chances are I won't use it in Civ5, either.

although strategic view in Civ IV is pretty bad. It seems much more useful in V...

don't you mean orgasmic?

The octagon map looks more orgasmic? Sounds good.

Circles!

Well, at the moment the strategic view seems a bit overwhelming and confusing, need a little time to get used to. It's pretty and well done... but years of using the normal view will lead me to using it again most of the time.

They do use the unit icons, at least i think they do, prove me wrong.

im on page 10
I saw it on 2kGreg's live play through. He showed us Strategic View and the scout unit was represented by a simplistic Hawk head drawing outline. Then, when he was playing as Japan, his Samurai units were represented by simplistic Samurai helmet drawing outlines. The icons were not represented by their "cool" unit symbol artwork, like how a rifleman unit will have an artwork picture of a group of riflemen with magnificent mustaches, aggressively holding a rifle.

I didn't even know it existed in Civ 4, and I needs meh pretty pictures

So I'm not likely to play on strategic view unless I can aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I like the strategic view, but I think I'll use it only when I want to get an overview of the situation, while normally playing in the "pretty" mode.

Does anyone know if the strategic view supports annotations like those we could draw in globe view of Civ4, or indeed signposts as we had in Civ4?

I like Strategic View in part because it's the only way I can play on my little-more-than-a-netbook laptop. That said, the bugs are heinous, starting with the inability to click on a unit that's Garrisoned and ending with the highlighted/visible unit being different from the one the game has selected needs move orders. Anyone else having problems?

I just posted a response to this in another thread... Here it is again.
(If it doesn't work let me know)

I can't select a unit that is in a city from the strategic view.

You can, but for some reason you need to be at one of the closest zoom levels. At least for me, the 3 closest zooms worked and anything further out didn't.

The problem I have with strategic view is that the icons (military) are not yet distinguishable enough for me to suit playing in that view most of the time. It demands far less system resources and has lots of nice map layers to access information quickly. If not for that concern, the main view would just be eye candy.

I didnt pay a whole lot of money for my current PC to play on a plain interface .. so no :P

110 hours in only in strategic view (my current computer is so old it crashes regularly in the normal view).

I might have played strategic view anyway though, I am more about gameplay then art and it is simply more clear.

No.

You can click on a garrisoned unit on the closest two zoom levels. You also can see what a city is building at those levels.

Definitely agreed. While the normal map is quite nice- especially the oceans (they nailed those in Colonization), the strategic view makes this feel more like a real strategy game, less like... well a non-strategy game.

The strategic view is invaluable. I love it.

Great for getting a grand view of everything clearly before or during a battle.

Great for searching for luxuries/strategic resources.

Great for designing road networks efficiently.

Great for planning out cities.

Great for.... it's just great, okay?! :D
