Personally I'm on the fence. As it stands today I certainly won't be purchasing it. I'm sure as more information becomes available my mind will change back and forth a few times before making a final decision. Of all the new features mentioned or hinted at, I like the hexes, but everything else I either don't like or don't know enough about it yet to say for sure.

After I played Civ3, I vowed I'd never EVER buy another product with Sid's name attached. This lasted until a friend convinced me to try his copy of Civ4. I was hooked again.

So now I'm cautiously optimistic.

As with all sequels though, the more important question is "will the community survive". Ultimately some will love it and others will hate it. Given the way communication and opinion holding works on the internet, it isn't enough that one's opinion is validated, but someone else's opinion must also be ridiculed.

I like the idea of a Civ5 and wish I could get excited about it, but I can't. I'm interested and find myself following the news of it, but the days of actually getting excited over Civ seem to be gone. All my goodwill for the franchise was finally exhausted half way through the Warlords patch process. But then a very ambitious BTS was announced with a promise to fix the MAF errors, and to finally make Vassals work proper. I bought the hype, got excited and the let down was big enough to have had a deep and lasting effect. I see that BTS finally did get a final patch, but despite a deep fondness for the Fall From Heaven mod, I went back to playing Conquests on Civ3.

I hope for the best in regards to Civ5. I have little faith left though.
Will wait and see and hope for some sort of Firaxian paradigm shift.
