I always wondered if there is anywhere someone better than me:). I played civ1 eversince I got my 286 12Mhz 1MB ram in the begining of 90s (must have been early when civ1 was out, really). I played many many hours every day and I got absolutely obsesed by civ1. None of my friends or people I know could match me in civ1.

Now I found this forum and I see there is even civ1 thread and I am looking forward to finding someone as civ1 fanatic as I am (was). How can you measure who is the best? Is there a MP for civ1 somewhere? Or any ladder? If not, what is your best achieve in civ1?

As for me, I played civ 1 of course on emperor level with 7 civilizations soon and after a while I started to win that absolutely. I stoped playing civ1 some 5 years ago and I played it once or twice since then.

From my personal best achieves I clearly remember beating emeror 7 civilizations before christ!!! It was earth map so I knew where to go and what to do and I remamber my first turns as greek to defeat rome and berlin with my starting setler only (before they got their first militia:))) than the rest went smoothly as well having only one newly born civ in africa and two in southern america... I think this could have been maybe the fastest emeror 7 civ game ever:). It was like 20BC when I defeated last enemy city:).

I also tried to play with one city only, but I dont know on which skill I finished. I am quite sure I never managed to win over 7 civilizations on emperor using one city only... Is there anybody who did that? What other stuff? I really dont remember. I know that I used to beat phalanx, catapults etc with my bombers and tanks on easier levels so my friends who barely could beat computer on warlord or prince levels laughted at how I could do that:).

What are your achieves? I am looking forward to talk to you since I never tried to find a site like this before civ4 went out- I barely played civ2 or 3 although I did play them. Recently I felt in love with civ4 again, so I started to play it- I played yet some 4 games only though:). I am on Prince level for the time (started on noble as suggested) and It seems like np to beat it although so many things changed since civ1 LOL.

TTG guy. He was the guy who built the civ1 section for civfanatics. He also used to frequent this forum years back. Irish Caesar (maybe Pickachu) are the only members who were there back then and still post in this forum. Maybe they could tell you a bit more about him. He was a legend, yep. Check out this thread from the achieve if you want to see how good he is. I very much doubt there are many players who rock at civ1 better then him.

As for me personally, I'm not the best player by far. I am on par with the AI in Prince and can sometimes pull of a King victory. As I've said before, I'm kinda glad I haven't mastered this game in the four years I've played it. If so, I might have got bored and moved on to civ2 ;)

Hmmm I didnt know of anything like lvl6 in civ1. That would be really a challenge!

Emperor was the toughest I was avare of and of course beatable. TTG wrote there that you have to use cheats to beat emperor lol. I knew of a cheat that shows you all map (I think it was shift+ all numbers) and I used it couple of times, but that was just when I was bored. I am 100% sure I could beat emperor 7 civilizations without a problem, although I rarely went 1st in technology all the time (but concuering weak city of advanced enemy gave you neccesary advances needed to build bulidings/units needed for example...). I know there was also a money cheat, but I never used that one!

I would like to know what cheats did HE meant, but the link he posted there does not work now:(.

I found a page (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=113563) with three more cehats described now... I have to say I didnt know of any of those so I could not use them except for savegame of course, but I did not use that one either (I saved games only when I needed to stop playing for a while for sure)...

But thanx, I will try to read about this guy some more, he seems like reall civ1 addicted guy as I used to be late in 90s:). TY and you all keep posting here!

I found nice topic there: http://forums.civfanatics.com/archive/index.php/t-12332.html

I red it through and I liked it. I didnt play like TTG suggests although I knew such a strategy is working (for example my one and only BC victory... so I tried it, but never played it on regular basis). I liked Cliffs posts and finaly cmotdibbler and dundass posts, becouse that is the way I used to play civilization all the time, making real long live civilization among those emperor fanatic ai civs:). I managed to win most of times even under these conditions becouse I developed nice stravegies through out the game. That is why I always thought there could probably be noone better in civ than I was:).

I see now that there was couple of good civ players. I have to look through the forum more though to get to know if I can match them. It is a shame I found this forum now, some 5 years after I stopped playing civilization and not before:((( (I dint have internet connection in those days, nor better computer than 286 lol).

I think I'm in the top 10, or the top 5 perhaps. I can beat Emperor most of the time, but not 100%. King is very easy for me though.

and welcome to the civ1 forum by the way :high5:

Oh yes, sure that emperor is not 100% wining only, couse sometimes you lose- 1) In a very early game if you have to defend against hordes of barbarians+ couple of aggresive ais. (from time to time I even didnt manage to build a first militia and my home city was captured lol). Or for example 2) Small island maps were really tought to play on emperor level as far as I can remember, becouse you couldnt capture enemy cities, get their technologies etc... and you had to do everything on your own, which is far harder...

I will have to reinstall my civ now to remember everything again, its been a while...:). You can test me then on some quest or such (will I get back to it?) :). I try to play civ4 now as well...

PS: Thanx for welcoming me here:). Looking forward to talking about te great Civilization!

well well well...

Who is the best civ1 player?

...maybe all those people who pretend
'they are very good CiV 1 (DOS) players'
should try that:

to play civ 1 DOS just
economical and scientifical
to see if you can handle this.

On the Wikipedia entry for civilization there is a link to a Civilizations FAQ page (which no doubt most of you have read!), and there are lot of people on there who seem pretty on to it with their understanding of the game, Ralph Betza comes to mind (he is into inventing chess variants too from what I've read) giving that this FAQ document was written years ago shows that there are some very meaty players out there or they have left civ1 behind on gone onto greener pastures, like Civ4...

That belemoth of a FAQ was written when civ1 had the largest community it will ever have. Back in '94 when civ1 was the best game everybody was playing and civII was just a dream. And still, 12 years in the future, it remains the best civ1 FAQ/resource ever. I actually wish I could make a civ1 FAQ just as big but updated with the knowledge of the game we have now.

I recommend all civ1 players to read that FAQ (I doubt any haven't yet but) and I also encourage all Civilization gamers of the sequels to as well: it's a fine piece of history and vividly gives us a look of what the Civilization community was like all those years ago ;)

Linky for that FAQ in case anybody wants it.
