I personally think it is the Americans. In all the games I've played they just seem to be the most cooperative civ. They always treat me with respect and I don't think they have ever demanded anything from me for free. And they also seem to keep their agreements the best. Most of the civs will stop trading with me imediately after the twenty turns is up if you don't offer than something new but it seems to me like the Americans keep trading until you do something to make them mad (which I never do). The only downside is the Americans are usually not a powerhouse but they can sometimes serve as a buffer between you and another strong civ. :satan: There are a lot threads about the civs you can never trust, well here's one for the civs that are the best to ally with.

I always find France and America easiest to deal with. They demand the least and usually sign treaties.

My goodness i honestly hate them the most. Frankly they expand too much. Kinda like the Monroe doctrine. You stay in your hemisphere. They decided to expand into my continent so i simply got the French Russians Persian and Aztecs on their continent to declare war. And to prevent anybody on my continent to trade with them i got the whole world in an aliance with me against them. The expansion is a pain in the but.

On the other hand i love the french. They seem to be the best ally for me. Since they are pacifists if you look at the .bic they dont declare war on me, but they do keep up an army, they are good to have as an ally to attack ppl.

Needless to say, After i am done with the babylonians on my continent, i will move my 50+ cavalry to the other continent and do my part to wipe the americans off of the earth, And get the JS Bach Catherdral in the process of grabbing atlanta. Another good thing is that they dont have any saltpeter and only one source of coal. Right next to American boarder.

I love trading tech though. I got a MPP with the Ruskies and gave them steampower if they gave me 61 gold a turn, the good part is that they dont have any coal:). And they are next on the chopping block as they have also landed on my continent. After them it is time to purge the indians and Germans. My goodness what has this game turned me into:)

The one reason i do dislike the Americans is the Same reason as the British and Germans, They all expand way too much. Every game its the Americans and Germans with the biggest ammount of land. And its all filled by useless 2 pop cities with no culture and lots of corruption. But the french are nice, peaceful, and good as allies.

The French are good buddies, unless they're under Communism and doing VERY well. That happened to me, I'm Russia, and trying to create a Democratic bloc against the communists in France and Rome...so far so good, got the MPPs in place, just gotta wait for them to attack me again...

The Russians, if you can pull them over, are pretty faithful too. I wouldn't give Bismarck a wooden nickel for an MPP, or Shaka. The Aztecs seem to, at the very least, stick to their word for the 20 turns its in place. Then they just won't sign anything.

America always gets killed by someone or another in my games. The expand willy-nilly, over-extend themselves and always seem to piss off my allied bloc. I end up killing them.

The rest of 'em are kinda inbetween...either I kill them or cripple them (or they do that to me  ).

Babylon.

If you have enough Culture to deal with the Babylonian Cultural Masters at your border, I've found that they generally make decent allies. They have yet to declare war on my civs, when many other civs have been stupid enough to try it at least once.

I have a new theory. THEY ALL SUCK!!!! ok well i had alliances with 4 civs to attack the americans. 2 of them had MPP's with me. I was already at war with the Bab's and it took 3 turns for my russian MPP to get active. ANd all the alliances i signed were broken. My faith in france is lost. Now no one is useful to keep around and they shall face my wrath  mua ha ha ha ha. Ok so yeah they are too unreliable for me. And mind you this was only on warlord. I'd hate to think about how they would act on a higer level, damn backstabbers.

It all depends on the cituation. Thats all that can be said.

Countries don't have friends, they have interests, so when the interests are in common, then alliances are possible.

I really like the egyptians when a war is starting and they are allies they will continue the war untill the other civ dies. We were 4 empires Greek(i)-Romans-Germans-Egyptians in the medieval ages i was 6th from 8(mpliaks this was a terrible game for me) after a egypt-german war ( i was nutral) the germans tryed to dystroy me(i am very happy because i had gold to give them) but after i had a golden age and i was finally the fourth power in the world after French-Germans-Egyptians then me with the egyptinas i make a alliancre and after they get the second position and i was approaching the germans AGREAT WAR BEGUN AHAHH we smush the germans before they get the panzers took all the roman cities and egyptians didint finhsh the war against the germans untill their death and they helped economicall when the war awarinees destriyed a building in my empire each turn(luck of money). :egypt: they are good

The French are always decent with my civ and are probably the most upstanding AI run civ... with regards to the player. But woe be to anyone else in their path! they are the foremost warmongers with the rest of the world. weird weird weird.

Isn't the best simply the least aggressive, such as France and India?

well, as far as I have seen, the most effective AI civs are the industrious ones, so the French have the double whammy of being PC friendly and effective. Sadly, the Indians (who are very nice as well) never seem to last long in the games I play (thru no fault of my own...:satan: )

They always seem to want to be allies, they've only betrayed me once, they are easily kept as allies, and I've found that consulting with Joan frequently on foriegn policy has its perks :D

I'll always ally myself with the most powerful civ in the game (by watching the power graph), though it may change with time. That's why I like to stick to one ally throughout the game, that means giving them up-to-date technology.

However, they could sometimes be real stupid (I'm sorry but they're), like declaring war on not one but two or more other civs thus dragging me into it too, which I could just barely save my ass. It would be worse if those against us have allies and their allies have allies and... you get the idea. So choose your friends wisely. For me I avoid agressive civs as my allies.

And muppet, a large civ doesn't mean nothing, really. If they're not powerful and advance enough, you could be looking at the decline of a huge empire. Remember a good ally is an alive one :)

Straight Up

GERMANY

And never ally yourself with the most powerful, or second if your first. Team up with the worst player, and take out the second strogest if you are first. That way, you've eliminated your most powerful enemy without really helping someone who could be potentiallyy dangerous in the near future.

Egypt and France. The Iroquois can be OK as allies, but so can anybody. Egypt and France don't mind kicking in money for techs, but Joan was being a wench about selling me fur last game. She was all picky about the tech she'd take and I was like just take the free artistry, *****.

The Greeks are peaceful and make good allies. The problem with them is that they're always very weak. From the powerhouses the best are really the French and the Egyptians. Also the Indians.Someone said that they were always killed and in my games that was never true.In fact in several games they were second to me.That's on Regent.I don't know what you've been playing, maybe there's some difference.

Germany!
I think they are the worst civ to ally with because they (at least with me) always break there word and push just too far!
once when they had an entire Island to themselfs and I had done nothing but bend over backwards to help them in there previous wars which was actually what gave them there Island.
Then they had the nerve to just land units on my coast (we had a Right of Passage and a Mutual protection Pact) and sneak attack my main city!!!!! they did not get it but mind you me it started a war that lead to me taking over half there Island before I was forced to end it for other reasons, mainly a huge war with the aztecs and english on my own island.

and I even remember before that other civs had told me to break my MPP with the Germans before they attacked me because there history was alread shady with them!
so I am now warning all of you of the Germans!
so next time when the Germans ask you for something, tell them that you have heard of there mistreatment of the Kefkonians

On the topic French!
I don't even mind sharing borders with them since they have been so nice to me all my games I usually don't try and wipe them off of my contenent or island I am usually on :goodjob:

Everyone's arguing about who is the best ally and why. I tend to think that the best allies depend on your strategy. For example, if you prefer to concentrate on boosting industry, boosting commerce and boosting military power, a scientific civilization (like the Greeks) would be a good choice of ally. The fact that they are weak shouldn't discourage you. If you can protect a good scientific civilization, then you have plenty of science with them. Chances are you'll have the gold and resources to trade anyway if you follow this strategy.

If you want to go for scientific pursuits, then ally with the weaker, wealthier and more docile nations (like France, India and again Greece).

These are just a few examples. But here are the exceptions to this opinion...

THE GERMANS... DOUBLE-CROSSING, BACKSTABBING WARMONGERING NAUGHTY PEOPLE!!! Even when they offer a MPP, they won't keep to it. Trade them your oil and they'll throw it back at you in the form of Panzers (if you let them advance that far). The Germans (if you're not using them) are a parasite that needs to be annihilated before they reach the Industrial Age.

Anybody who is Expansionist, as they tend to gain territory much quicker. Expansionist means nothing to human players, but it means that the CPU will expand like an ant colony. So it is best to deal with the English, Americans, Iriquois, Zulu, etc. quickly (even if it is only preventing their continuing expansion by blocking them off from all land-based and sea-based expansion). If you can prevent these civs from expanding too far, you can strike out their exception with a fatass permanent marker.

 THE GERMANS

Seems they aren´t much of an ally, they were destroyed before I could get to meet them in the last game.Weird though that they are like that, any other nation like that?

Personally agree on the French, peaceloving, yet strong enough.
They like trading tech and are faithful. Also agree on the Americans as a buffer, good trading partners...

BUT NM WHAT WAS SAID HERE,DON´T TRUST THE INDIANS!!

They are backstabbers too, what´s more they´re so smart to ally with you while your weak and attack you when you´re powerful
