I'm just starting Civ IV and I'm setting some scouts to auto expplore early in the game. Later on I sometimes get messages that my scout was destroyed by a warrior while defending, but I'm not told who attacked me, nor can I figure out how I'm supposed to get that information.

When I decide to attack another player's unit I'm asked if I wisah to declare war on that player. I assume the same rule goes for computer players? If so, when this warrior attacked my scout why do I not recieve a message informing me who is attacking and declaring war on me so I can exact revenge or do something useful like close my borders to them if we have an open borders agreement?

The warrior was certainly a barbarian unless you were already at war with someone else. You are effectively at war with the barbarians all the time.

You will receive a message (and a loud trumpet noise) when someone declares war on you. There is no need to close borders or anything like that since any agreements are cancelled on declaration of war. In any case the status of your borders is irrelevant in warfare.

Your scout probably got killed by a barbarian. They wander around the game unless you play a custom game with the "No Barbarians" option. Barbarians are like any other AI civilization except that you can't have any kind of diplomatic relations with them, so they don't declare war - they're always in a state of war with you.

Your scout definitely got killed by a barbarian unless you are at war. Go to diplo screen to see if you are at war.

to see where your scout was when it was killed, do this:
on the left side of the top info bar there's a little open book icon (the game log)
click that to open the log,
now find the message that you got about your scout getting killed (if you just got it, it should be the top one)
click on the message.
the map should center to where whatever prompted the message happened.
you wont see the barbarian warrior probably though, cause once your scout is dead, fog of war covers the landscape and you can no longer see any units there

If you're bothered about it you can turn on "Show enemy moves" in the options.

Thanks for the clarification everyone. It does indeed seem to be a Barbarian attack. I just wish the combat message indicated it was a barbarian. When it said I'd been killed by a warrior I assumed it was one of the other pesky AI players. Very confusing.

Thanks again everyone :)
